Here is my suggestion for a counterproposal that Democratic Congressmembers can take to the public right now. I think that they would find overwhelming support.
Publicize the fact that the Bush administration has sent the navy to blockade Iran. Talk about the administration's desires to go to war with Iran. Summarize their foolishness instarting a war for no reason (except election politics) when the other war that was started for no reason is still raging.
Mention that because of Bush, Anbar province in SW Iraq is now overrun with Al Qaeda, threatening Jordan, Saudi Arabia and eventually Lebanon and Israel. Say that the US is overextended and it is time for us to admit that we need help. We need to ask the UN to step in and assist us in rebuilding Iraq's roads, hospitals, schools, businesses. Other countries should be invited to invest. Muslim countries if possible. Also Asian ones.
Present the alternatives as saving Iraq and preventing Al Qaeda from taking over a strategic part of Iraq that will threaten our allies for years to come OR getting us involved in yet another war with another country that we can not win.
I strongly suspect that Al Qaeda is in Anbar because the NeoCons and the Saudis want them there to seperate Syria from Shia Iraq and Iran, so the administration probably does not intend to do anything to flush them out. But if these guys are allowed to remain there, they have a perfect launching point for attacks on Jordan and Lebanon and Israel, with a southern backdoor for Saudi Arabia to send them supplies and troops. This is a major disaster in the making. Recall that Bill Clinton said that the most important thing Bush could do is create a Palestenian/Israeli peace. If Al Qaeda gets involved in the Palestenian conflict, they will not do what is best for the Palestinian people. They will sacrifice them as martyrs for their crazy cause, and there will never be peace.
