I'm so upset by this torture thing that I even wrote to Ted Stevens

Dear Senator Stevens,

I'm writing to urge you to oppose the Torture/Military Tribunal bill proposed by the president. The "compromise" worked out by Senators McCain, Graham and Warner is not nearly good enough.

It is unconscionable that the president wants the right to subject uncharged captives to the kind of extreme interrogation techniques that he has requested. It is unconscionable that he has reserved to himself the right to interpret the Geneva Conventions however he sees fit. We are a nation of laws. We are supposed to be the good guys. We have always been proud to be regarded as the moral compass of the world. But I'm now deeply saddened by what we've become, a nation that tortures, that "disappears" people on mere suspicion, that holds them captive for indefinite periods of time without being charged or tried.

We should be better than this. Please consider carefully how you vote on this bill, and follow your conscience. I trust you will do the right thing.

2. I know, it's very sad...

I also sent one to Lisa Murkowski, who at least seems to be a little more in touch with reality than old Ted. She resisted the Patriot Act renewal, although ultimately caving, so maybe she'll at least consider what I had to say.

I'm really so appalled by this whole thing that it's hard for me to even think about anything else. I hate the administration for fucking with my golden years like this.
