Has anyone else received a strange payment acceptance from PAYPAL?
I did today from e-Bay in behalf of Emily Eckhart in the amount of $2.78. We were hit this afternoon with something strange saying our PayPal account info was being verified and we turned our computers off.

Later tonight we recieve confirmation we have been charged for $2.78. Happen to anyone else?

We've been plagued with viruses, worms and trogans for the last two weeks and we were finally fully back up and on-line today and this happened.

Any ideas?

1. report it to paypal
asap.

They have a special screen off the main menu for this. it's more than likely a phishing scam.

2. Contact eBay and PayPal is all I can say...

Tried a search for "Emily Eckhart" both through Google and eBay itself and got no hits regarding a scam or virus, so you should contact eBay and PayPal directly for their help in the matter.

3. Forward the email with headers to spoof@paypal.com
Don't click on anything in the email. It's phishing for your personal info and is fake, no matter how real it looks. After you forward the email to PayPal, delete it.

10. Right on that!!
I've been getting quite a few of such "phishing" emails lately. I forwarded some to PayPal, and got confirmation. There's probably no great danger in "clicking" on the link, provided you go no further. But if you just "touch" the link with the pointer, the real address should appear at the bottom of the screen. It'll be hokey-looking enough to alarm even the most trusting.

20. I use Firefox/1.5.0.7 almost exclusively.
There might be a "phish-philter" for that too. I'll look for one.

4. You probably already have your answer.
"We've been plagued with viruses, worms and trogans for the last two weeks and we were finally fully back up and on-line today and this happened."

I am getting undelivered email messages to people I don't know with my name as return address/sub. Dunno what's going on but all maintenance progs run clean---I can sympathize.

6. You likely responded to a request from Paypal for Credit Card Info.
w/in the last week or so. The site looks exactly like the Paypal site. They (the scammers) are posting a small charge to see if the acct info they got is valid.

Their next step is to make BIG charges. My F-I-L got screwed by this scam in a big way!

Cancel everything related to it...NOW! My hubby spent 3 weeks of weekends getting his dad through the scammer-shit induced inferno. Fortunately Hubby is a Stanford MBA in the software field.

Honestly - Tens of Thousands.

9. A great many have been sucked into this scam lately
It makes perfect sense until you look at the address - It's not 'paypal.com' It is a slight variance on it.

PS - PAYPAL tells you to NEVER give your info.

A great many older ppl (prime scammer targets) were sucked into it in the last few months.

17. Paypal doesn't send emails
A lot of people don't realize that. Neither do banks.

I get these Paypal emails all the time. Only one problem - I don't have a Paypal account. I have never had a Paypal account.

11. Seems like 99 percent of "phishing" schemes involve PayPal.
Any email I get that involves PayPal in any way, or purports to be from them, I assume to be a phishing scam until proven otherwise.

In your case since your system was afflicted by viruses/Trojans etc. they could have gotten your PayPal account info from files on your machine. If there's any doubt at all, cancel the account.

12. Get a better spam filter
And know that anything that comes in your email that you don't recognize is spam and just delete it on site.

13. One way PayPal says that you can identify email
that isn't coming from them:

If the email doesn't use your name, but instead uses "PayPal member" or similar salutation, it isn't from PayPal.

Don't click on any links in the email. Just forward it to PayPal (spoof@paypal.com)

14. There is a very simple
and complete way to find out if eBay or PayPal have sent you an official email. Look at the body of the message, and if they use your REAL name, it's from them. ALL OTHERS, including any that start with Dear eBayer, Dear member, Hi there, or any one of a half dozen or more standard greetings with no mention whatsoever of your name, are phishing attempts, regardless of how official they are.

That's all it needs--your name, because a phisher can not know your real name, and must address it ambiguously.

15. You've been scammed...
We got the same email (different name & amount) this past week. YOU have to change your Paypal passwords . .and maybe link a different account)

Anyone else gets this, forward it to spoof@paypal.com. DO NOT click on any links in that email.. they do not go to paypal.

18. Yes, just last week, for someone in Arkansas' "title search": $250.
I reported it to PayPal; they investigated. My records don't show such a debit.
Yesterday I got an e-mail about needing to check something or my account would be closed.

Simply deleted. Hoaxes abound.

Never ever respond to those emails. If you want to check your status, go directly to Paypal site.
