Shocking Sovietisation of America and Canada
http://www.khaleejtimes.ae/DisplayArticleNew.asp?xfile=data/opinion/2006/September/opinion_September65.xml§ion=opinion&col=

IN THE late 1980’s, I was the first western journalist allowed into the world’s most dreaded prison, Moscow’s sinister Lubyanka. Muscovites dared not even utter the name of KGB’s headquarters, calling it instead after a nearby toy store, Detsky Mir.

I still shudder recalling Lubyanka’s underground cells, grim interrogation rooms, and execution cellars where tens of thousands were tortured and shot. I sat at the desk from which monsters who ran Cheka (Soviet secret police) - Dzerzhinsky, Yagoda, Yezhov, Beria — ordered 30 million victims to their deaths.

Prisoners taken in the dead of night to Lubyanka were systematically beaten for days with rubber hoses and clubs. There were special cold rooms were prisoners could be frozen to near death. Sleep deprivation was a favourite and most effective Cheka technique. So was near-drowning in water fouled with urine and faeces.

I recall these past horrors because of what I have long called the gradual Sovietisation of the United States. Now, Canada has also become afflicted. We have seen America’s president and vice president, sworn to uphold the US Constitution that expressly forbids ‘cruel and unusual punishment,’ advocating exactly the same tortures techniques the KGB used at the Lubyanka. The Bush Administration has claimed beating, freezing, sleep deprivation, isolation, and near drowning, were necessary to prevent terrorist attacks. So did KGB.

The White House position was that anyone accused of ‘terrorist activities’ - including Americans — could be kidnapped, tortured, and tried in camera using ‘evidence’ obtained from torturing other suspects, without any appeal or judicial review.

3. That's what Canada gets for collaborating with the Bush mob on terror
They have no respect for human lives. Everything these mobsters touch turns to shit and everybody who lies down with them gets up smelling like shit.

Every country should break off relations with this mob that has stolen the United States, and only restore relations when the mob has been removed.

4. agree with gist but...
killing 30 million people, even over 30 years (1920-1950) is 10 million a year, which is 28000 people every single day. first off, the soviets, including stalin, were only after the 'intelligensia' which included the community leadership and workers right people of the poorer class, peasant leaders and so on, who they suspected of opposing them; and remember the USA never even recognised the USSR until 1934! they certainly never killed for fun, or outta boredom, or due to racism/sexism/religion, it was because of politics....the point with this 'yes but' is that the same people who NEVER MENTION the 1200 black americans murdered in Tulsa, Okl during the famous Tulsa kkk pogram back in the 1920's(?) are also those who say the USSR murdered (i've seen numbers as huge as 120 million people, seriously, rush limbah-hum buggers typically claims the soviets murdered such vast numbers, even today, as if the more the merrier!) the problem is that to accuse revolutionary russia of mindless murderous stupidity is to allow true mindless murderous stupidity of bureaucratic thugs like negroponte and otto reich etc to get away with murder. the USSR left both the judiciary and the executive in the hands of single group (the top men of the commie party) and power corrupted them, yes, but to blame the revolution itself, and the millions who benefitted from the revolution (to pretend stalin didn't do anything to build the USSR up into a world power, except terrorise his own people) is wrong. lawlessness is best confronted by having an independent judiciary, with the legislative machinery well run - iow there's no need to reinvent the wheel! fact is, fascism has routinely killed and brutalized and ruined lives 1000 times worse then revolutionary effort, which remain disorganized/ad hoc by their very nature...fact is most 'soviet' citizens never saw a policeman during all the years i mentioned- the amazing feats the soviets (ie workers) performed was primarily the result of local effort and initiatives.....

5. It Goes Way Deeper Than That
Edited on Sun Sep-24-06 08:43 AM by Crisco
It's not just the horror story of law-and-order authoritarianism, it's how specialized everything is becoming.

Our schools, from magnet grade schools right up to specialized colleges offering specialized degrees. Our corporate employers welcome new recruits with specialized educations and training and yet, if you look at the educations of the CEOs and the boards of directors, you'll find *their* educations are far more broad in scope.

Our agriculture industry, intent on wiping out small independent farmers.

Our medical system.

Everything.

Specialized economies have brought profound changes to our nation and it's only going to get worse.

7. A good example of this is laws protecting us against Mad Cow disease...
Edited on Sun Sep-24-06 10:09 AM by calipendence
In both Europe and in Japan, there are laws now in effect that not only protect against feeding of recycled cattle in their own feed, but also prevents recycled cattle from being fed to poultry, pork or other farm animals, and also not having those animals being fed back to cows.

In both the U.S. and Canada, despite activists in both Canada and in the U.S. trying to work to do this as well, we have our industry shutting down efforts to also include a ban on feeding other recycled animal parts to cattle and vice versa, even if we have a ban on the more obvious offending practice of feeding recycled cattle back to cattle.

Why is this important? Because poultry and pigs, though they don't get infected like cattle do with mad cow, have been shown to be carriers of this disease, and this is just one more example of where corporate profits are going to kill off America.

Other examples of Corporate America's will destroying the health of Americans and other people?

- using HFCS instead of regular sugar cane or sugar beet sugar, which is likely why we have an epidemic of diabetes in young people now.
- depleted uranium in our weaponry, which is likely a cause of Gulf War syndrome and higher rates of cancer that persist wherever we've had conflicts since using them (Bosnia, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.). We now also still have problems in southeast asia from the effects of dioxin remnants of our usage of Agent Orange.
- the Bhopal disaster in India.
- the higher price of pharmaceutical drugs here in America vs. other countries because of the fascist elements of the Medicare bill regarding restrictions on the ability of the government to negotiate decent bulk purchase prices of drugs.
- the MTBE additive in our gasoline here in California, which WAS the brainchild of the oil industry, NOT those truly wanting to put in place standards protecting our environment as it was being sold as. It was nothing more than a way to get the California state government to subsidize their revamping of their oil refineries, and subsequently justify and increase of prices of gasoline at the pump to "accomodate" this supposedly helpful additive to the environment, which in actuality is found to hurt it.

Heck corporations are writing many of our bills like the medicare bill, etc. through our congress critters, and these congress critters get rewarded with jobs when the leave government too, in addition to the corporate contributions they receive while in office for their campaigns.

Welcome to the world of Corporatist Fascist Feudalism!

9. I've been thinking of Canada for a long time as a place to go when things
get bad here and also all my Canadian friends can't believe what's happening here in the US, yet this article points out that similar things are happening in Canada.

I personally don't believe that they are happening to the degree there as they are here, but I think our friends to the North need to watch over their government and be more diligent than we here in America have been before they find themselves not to far behind our totalitarian and tyrannical police state that we are becoming.

I don't want to seem rude, but I have a somewhat wry laugh to myself when I hear Americans say, "If things get really bad here, I'll just move to Canada."

Deep Integration Planned at Secret Conference Ignored by the Media
Contributed by: sthompson

Here's the scandal that should be outraging Canadians across the country. On September 12-14, elite proponents of deep integration from Canada, the U.S. and Mexico met at a secret conference at the Banff Springs Hotel. Stockwell Day, Tom d'Aquino and other high-profile Canadians were there. But the Hotel doesn't want to talk about it. No major media reported on the conference--not The Globe and Mail, not the National Post, not the Toronto Star, no one. Yet the topic of the conference, deep integration or the formation of a "North American Community" aka the North American Union, will profoundly affect everything in our lives from our health and security to the currency we use (soon to be the "Amero") to our very national identity. In essence, we will no longer be Canadians, but North Americans only--and worse, North Americans hog-tied in lock-step with the U.S. even as they gain open access to our energy resources.

Our national media stays silent and so Canadians remain unaware that their own CCCE and most powerful politicians are pushing for integration with the U.S. and Mexico completely outside of the usual democratic process. The only newspaper to report anything on this as yet is the Banff Crag & Canyon, which is publishing an article on the conference today thanks to information provided by Mel Hurtig.

team....

I figure based on this type of information, Canada would only be a few years behind the US. Funny thing is how most Canadians (like most Americans) always say "It can't happen here"....

Oh yes it can, and it is....

13. Toward a North American Union

Toward a North American Union
Volume 6, Issue 5

By: Patrick Wood
Editor, The August Review

SNIP

Soon after NAFTA was passed in 1994, Dr. Robert A. Pastor began to push for a "deep integration" which NAFTA could not provide by itself. His dream was summed up in his book, Toward a North American Union, published in 2001. Unfortunately for Pastor, the book was released just a few days prior to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and thus received little attention from any sector.

However, Pastor had the right connections. He was invited to appear before the plenary session (held in Ontario, Canada) of the Trilateral Commission on November 1-2, 2002, to deliver a paper drawing directly on his book. His paper, "A Modest Proposal To the Trilateral Commission", made several recommendations:

* "... the three governments should establish a North American Commission (NAC) to define an agenda for Summit meetings by the three leaders and to monitor the implementation of the decisions and plans.
* A second institution should emerge from combining two bilateral legislative groups into a North American Parliamentary Group.
* "The third institution should be a Permanent Court on Trade and Investment
* "The three leaders should establish a North American Development Fund, whose priority would be to connect the U.S.-Mexican border region to central and southern Mexico.
* The North American Commission should develop an integrated continental plan for transportation and infrastructure.
* "...negotiate a Customs Union and a Common External Tariff
* "Our three governments should sponsor Centers for North American Studies in each of our countries to help the people of all three understand the problems and the potential of North America and begin to think of themselves as North Americans"12

Pastor's choice of the words "Modest Proposal" are almost comical considering that he intends to reorganize the entire North American continent.

Nevertheless, the Trilateral Commission bought Pastor's proposals hook, line and sinker. Subsequently, it was Pastor who emerged as the U.S. vice-chairman of the CFR task force that was announced on October 15, 2004:

"The Council has launched an independent task force on the future of North America to examine regional integration since the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement ten years ago... The task force will review five spheres of policy in which greater cooperation may be needed. They are: deepening economic integration; reducing the development gap; harmonizing regulatory policy; enhancing security; and devising better institutions to manage conflicts that inevitably arise from integration and exploit opportunities for collaboration."13

17.  Cockroaches like to do their work in the dark.

Public kept in dark as business leads talks about North American integration, By Maude Barlow

Sep. 20, 2006. 01:00 AM

While the media were busy obsessing over rumours of a budding romance between Condoleezza Rice and Peter MacKay last week, a more significant relationship was developing behind closed doors.

Away from the spotlight, from Sept. 12 to 14, in Banff Springs, Minister of Public Safety Stockwell Day and Defence Minister Gordon O'Connor met with U.S. and Mexican government officials and business leaders to discuss North American integration at the second North American Forum.

SNIP

The event was chaired by former U.S. secretary of state George Schultz, former Alberta premier, Peter Lougheed and former Mexican finance minister Pedro Aspe.

Despite the involvement of senior North American politicians, organizers did not alert the media about the event. To make it worse, our government will not be issuing a public statement and refuses to release any information about the content of the discussions or the actors involved.

Day's office has been telling journalists that it cannot comment on the minister's private meeting and that journalists should understand this. So much for accountability.

15. K & R
Torture is torture no matter who does it, no matter what you call it, and no matter the circumstances. There is no such things as ‘limited torture,’ as its current advocates claim.  History shows almost without exception that once torture is allowed, its use spreads rapidly and becomes a routine practice of security forces.

26. I dug up some old VHS tapes of Amerika TV series and dubbed them to DVD
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 12:35 PM by calipendence
this weekend. Or at least started to. Haven't finished yet.

Also had a copy of a good chunk of the Nightline show that aired that night about Soviet TV and their media back in 1987 when Gorbachev was still in power. Watching this was downright spooky.

I had them sitting on the shelf since I recorded them in 1987 and had almost completely forgotten them. Drug them out and decided to give them a new play and a dub to loan out for others' viewing.

The infamous ABC was the one that put this series out, though I think this was put out before Disney bought them out if I'm not mistaken. At least they put up warning signs that this was a complete work of fiction. You could tell there was some posturing that had it lean in many places to have language putting down communist and socialist ideology compared to American, but that didn't strike me as the main themes coming out of the story itself. It was about totalitarianism, and you could plug in the neocons of today (and their enablers like Colin Powell) in places and have an almost believable not to distant future plot line.

It was also weird hearing the comments over the credit crawls discussing what was on Nightline later or Good Morning America the next day. One night they mentioned that the Nightline topic was the possibility that our government was considering Arab detention centers. This was 20 years ago folks, way before Guantanamo of today.

A lot of similarities:
1) People blaming "exiles" (those homeless trying to find places to live) in the film for their problems, much like many of us today blame illegal immigrants for our problems now.
2) The government takeover of farm land in the film earlier kind of mirrors the corporate takeover farms that have taken place since then now.
3) lack of trust of people and not knowing who's "playing the game" which is what many of todays kids are being conditioned to do rather than question authority (aka "Jesus Camp"). This was happening in the film too.
4) Debating on whether to be the frog in the slow boiling pot and not taking immediate action and trying to wait for the right moment to do incremental changes, vs. taking more riskier efforts like Kris Kristoferson's character did on taking on the system more directly. You can see that being debated by whistleblowers and some people in government now too.

There's a lot of other parallels to today's society that one can get out of it if you think about things in various places. Kinda spooky.

Sam Neill's character said that the reason they (the Soviets then) took us over is that we lost our passion that we had earlier that made our counry great. I think that's food for thought now too.
