I Am Against Torture

I am against torture. I am on record.

In the land of the free home of the brave, United States of America is actually bringing to a vote in Congress, a bill allowing torture. How in the world did it come to this?

I am fifty five years old, born in USA, served in the USA military and have two purple hearts. A person has to actually come out and stand in opposition to state sponsored torture.

I am an America loving American proudly wearing the honorable label of liberal. "What ever happened to the 'land of the free - home of the brave?"

1. WE have been taken over by GESTASPO types!

Dressed up like preachers!

Gawd Help The USA

I'm not proud to be an American
Where we now pretend we're free,
And I won't forget the pubs who lied
And brought shame to you and me,

And I gladly stand up and protest
As they waterboard today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt they've tortured folks
God help the U.S.A.

2. It's unlikely the bill will be passed
Edited on Sun Sep-24-06 07:01 AM by brentspeak
Though, I agree it's terrible that this kind of bill would exist in the first place.

5. Why are you so certain that this is the case?
This Congress has passed some pretty egregious laws over the past few years. Why would they not cave on this one?

3. Standing right beside you, emanymton
I'm 43 years old, born in the USA, served in the US military and have one black & blue heart from what the Republicons have done to my country. I stand beside you in opposition to the tyranny confronting us.

I AM AGAINST TORTURE.

Any American who is for it or is unwilling to speak out against it isn't worthy of the freedoms our forefathers bravely fought to bestow on us.

7. I stand with Emanymton
Perhaps I do need to be on record! It never occurred to me that I needed to come out and say it, I just of took it for granted. Like my decorated friend, I am 54 years old, I was born in this Country, served in the US military, I am a Disabled Veteran, and I stand in opposition to state sponsored torture.

I am a proud Liberal and I oppose this lying manipulative Administration.

12. Torture is barbaric. Torture is ineffective. Torture is sadistic.
I can't stand the idea we are represented by people that sanction it or are too chickenshit to say "No, this is wrong."

14. I am against it as well
How dark have the skies over America become that we feel the need to say so? This is a snippet from an email I sent this morning to someone in the media:

Many Americans including myself are appalled that such debate is even necessary over an issue that is pretty clear cut to anyone who takes pride in our system of government and the ideals that we thought served as its foundation. Americans should not be engaging in anything that can even be remotely described as torture. Not just because it provides bad info, hurts our image, creates enemies out of it's victims and their kith and kin, corrupts the morals of those who perform it, and violates the Constitution and treaties that are the law of the land. No, most Americans are appalled by the parsing of this issue because it is just plain wrong and we expect our elected officials to take a strong stance against it.

Notice how with basic issues the right position has multiple arguments in it's favor while the wrong one barely has one if any.

15. I just feel sorry for all of our minders here at DU...
It must be hard to defend the leadership of the Democratic Party when they won't oppose something so awful as outright torture. The skies will be black tonight from all the straw-men they'll be burning. This is the final legacy of the third way; not even our basic, fundamental moral beliefs are safe from wrong-headed compromise.

19. Americans will be outraged the next time a US soldier or
CIA operative is captured and tortured. Torture, it seems, is only good when someone else is the victim. I am already disgusted beyond words by what has happened to this country. The framers of the Constitution must be rolling in their graves.
