Jane Harmon puts it right. They are Boxing in the Democrats

on the torture issue. They will be caught between 'protecting the American people' and torturing posed as a 'tool' to get Al Qaeda.

She fears that the vote will come at 3am Saturday morning as the Senate is breaking for the elections and force a vote.

This is as sick as American politics gets.

This is a typical ROVE tactic.

1. No, It's A Typical Congressional Dem Tactic
They refuse to do the right thing because one of their patrons might get upset - then they claim that they need to triangulate.

How about doing what is right, and not doing what is wrong? We are facing the Devil, and inventing moral ambiguities.

8. Amen to that.
We are so fearful.

What good will it do to win if we stand for torture like the other side does? What have we gained?

Sounds like our Democrats want to keep spreading Democracy, so what are we gaining?

We won't stand up against torture, we want to keep spreading Democracy....I have chilly and uneasy feelings today.

10. I agree. They put themselves into that position. Why not stand up and
say it's wrong? Post the pictures, roll the torture video. Instead they just cower in fear that they might be called "weak on terror". What useless twits!

12. If every single Democrat in Congress would vote against this
torture bill they would certainly gain more credibility with the voters than they would lose.....So wake up Congressman and Senators vote no and quit worrying about the consequences...

3. Dem meme - GOP Wrong on terrorism
Dems need to hammer home the point that fighting terrorism badly is worse than not fighting it at all. Label the GOP as the bumbling, ignorant thugs they are, torturing people for no good reason and getting nothing in return.

GOP is obviously worried Dems will do this, hence all the phony stories about bin Laden being dead. Dems have a huge advantage in pointing out how all this torture has accomplished nothing. They just have to remember to repeat their message over and over and over.

And they needn't worry about not having McCain on their side. There are plenty of retired military leaders who are willing to back them up on opposing the bill they're pushing.

4. They can't box them into a corner if they stand for what is right.
That is just not going to fly.

That is our party's responsibility to explain what is going on about this, and they are afraid of being boxed in a corner?

Not again, please.

5. The Democratic Party could "box" the Republicans as the party of TORTURE.
Starting RIGHT NOW.

But, apparently they are too scared to do what's right, or even worse, don't know what's right.

7. It's actually an opportunity for the Party leadership, a HUGE one, to win
AND do what's right at the same time, by simply standing up for what is right and moral. Loudly and proudly.

But apparently it's too much to ask.

11. I agree. I think we expect the dem party to act on our behalf.
They only exist to get re-elected or so it seems.

Maybe they have all been 'compromised' thru the bush* wiretapping program.

Would not surprise me. If that is the case, game over.
