Falwell Says Faithful Fear Clinton More Than Devil
The evangelical leader tells a conference that the New York senator will mobilize his base like no one else if she runs for president.

A recording of Falwell's comments was obtained by The Times, and his remarks were confirmed by eyewitnesses.

"I certainly hope that Hillary is the candidate," Falwell said, according to the recording. "She has $300 million so far. But I hope she's the candidate. Because nothing will energize my like Hillary Clinton."

Cheers and laughter filled the room as Falwell continued: "If Lucifer ran, he wouldn't."

At that moment in the recording, Falwell's voice is drowned out by hoots of approval. But two in attendance, including a Falwell staff member, confirmed that Falwell said that even Lucifer, the fallen angel synonymous with Satan in Christian theology, would not mobilize his followers as much as the New York senator and former first lady would.

Hillary Clinton has been a great senator for my state. She is probably the hardest working senator and intelligent to boot. What is it that sets these goons off about Hillary. I don't think there is a full brain in the whole bunch of Falwell followers. I doubt they even know why they hate her. I have asked goons like that why they hate Hillary and they can't give me an answer.

One would think that, as a Protestant minister, Dr. Falwell would put his efforts into alleviating the recent flurry of hyperbole in ascribing the characteristics of a sacred symbol to mere mortals. I know it's counterintuitive, but the Devil is a sacred symbol.

By instead engaging in the hyperbole, Dr. Falwell was given us further evidence to support the charge that he, first and foremost, not a man of the cloth but a political hack and a demagogue.
