11. He's still a conservative ....
... make no mistake about that. He has, however, been warning against the "religious right" for a long time.

He was interviewed by Terri Gross (Fresh Air) a year or two ago ... itt was an inter sting and insightful interview.

To me, he's an intelligent and reasonable conservative (vs. a crazed religious zealot or a neocon)... but he is still a conservative.

4. He and all of us should read "Conservatives Without Conscience."
A powerful read that shows it's not as facile as "The Christian Right." It's people with a severe authoritarian personality disorder - the Christian Right, Corporatists, power-hungry RW politicians, etc.

Authoritarianism is the connecting thread.

5. No, maybe we should read Danforth's book.
"Faith and Politics: How the 'Moral Values' Debate Divides America and How to Move Forward Together"

He's been very outspoken about the takeover of the repub's by the religous right for a very long time. He's a minister, and he makes a whole lot of sense.

9. He really stood up to Russert.....
Russert was asking the usual histrionic questions "Do you mean to say that....?!!" and Danforth was just answered with a flat "yes."

15. Exactly. I have trouble believing that this comes as
any sort of shock to a man like Danforth. His party actively courted the fundamentalists and organized them as a voting block. They knew it was irresponsible, or should've, but they wanted power so badly they did it anyway. They're losing their grip on the tiger's tail.

I don't much care for John Danforth. He was interviewed by Al Franken recently, and he did not live up to the hype, IMHO. He essentially said that both parties are equally guilty of creating the current atmosphere, and that both parties should work to marginalize their bases. For the Republicans that means religious fanatics, and for Democrats, according Danforth, it means labor and the teachers' union.
