Freeper-like glurge e-mail and my response to it
I received this today from a sometime correspondent from years past:

A United States Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an a vowed atheist and a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes." The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am God. I'm still waiting." It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him knocking him off the platform.

The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence.

The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What the hell is the matter with you? Why did you do that?"

The Marine calmly replied, "God was too busy today protecting America's troops who are protecting your
right to say stupid shit and act like an asshole."

My response below (I included my new e-mail sig line, as he hasn't seen it before - it should fill him in on what I think about, politically).

Variation on a theme...::::yawn::::

It wasn't enough that the mythical professor was an asshole, someone had to tag him as an atheist and an ACLU member (I am both, BTW, and I wouldn't behave like that).

Currently America's troops aren't protecting my free speech, or indeed any of my other rights. Nobody but my own government is threatening our civil liberties. Unfortunately for our troops, they have been sent into harm's way by a man who is misusing them over there, abusing them when they return, and not losing much sleep about either. I feel for them and their families, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. But This tale is glurge, plain and simple.

2. Yeah, and this sounds like a variation on an old story.
Another version of "atheist prof challenges student" is on Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/religion/chalk.htm#jackchick

Sounds like this one is just a variation designed to weave in support for the war.

6. Exactly why I said "variation on a theme" as my opening line
I was going to add the Snopes link, but forgot it at the last minute. Ah, well.

4. My response would be . . .
and the Marine was expelled from the school, sued by the professor for enough money that he could retire, and then was tried and convicted for assault and spent 3 years doing hard time. The professor lived happily ever after.

12. I'm reminded of Monty Python myself..anyone remember this?
"...And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this, Thy hand grenade, that with it, Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits... in Thy mercy." And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and large chu... ... And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it." Amen."

These people are arrogant self-righteous holier than thou hypocrites who think that God needs THEM to kill for him... last time I checked God was pretty well set with hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis and other ways to kill...he didn't need the wingnuts...

This "letter" you received is just wingnut propaganda - it never happened. As bad as it is to contrive the straw man professor in the piece, they then turned around and made the Marine into a jackbooted thug who uses his military training to beat up on civillians.

Disgusted..

I'll use that point, thanks. :)

15. And you can bet the original (choke) author of that tripe
never served a second in any branch of the military in his life...else he'd know that a college-attending Marine wouldn't behave in that fashion. They go for the whole package--brains are as important as physical strength as you move up the ladder.

Shameful. Smacks of desperation to prove a hideous and unworkable point, dunnit?

18. The whole piece is overwrought, and I agree, a desperation ploy.
I'd be ashamed of writing it, if I had.

16. What kind of person thinks they can score points with that story?
It seems vulgar and sophomoric to me, like a swastika crudely scrawled on a synagogue wall.

until now. As to his profession, NYC Police Lieutenant.
