Pope Benedict XVI has praised an Italian nun for pardoning her killers as she lay dying in Somalia from an attack that may have been linked to Muslim anger over his remarks about Islam and violence.

reminds me of a story my brain was being rinsed with when I attended a x-tian skule at the age of 11.
A car loaded with nuns had a one car accident, crashed, burned, and caused the deaths of all 6 penguin-dressed virgins. The next week, the priest had the gall to stand up in my class and instruct us that each and every one of them had been saying their lord's prayer just before the crash.

Being an early rabble rouser, I asked two questions:
a) how could anyone know if there were no survivors,
b) if they were praying so well and so hard, why did they die? Didn't it seem as thought prayer did not matter, since so many other drivers made it past the curve without an accident?

I was not a favored student in grade skule.

He equates "authentic Christian testimony" with love and being victorious "over hate and evil".

Rightly or wrongly, some will take that as a reference to Islam. Unless there was more context, but I'm just going by what AP reported.

and no-one can seriously take his words as being about Islam in this case. While I think he was either astoundingly dumb, or purposely offensieve, in his original speech, I think he's on safe ground with this.

is in line with ancient and fundamental theology and morality concerning Christian martyrdom, around since Christ founded the Church with Peter and the martyrdom of Stephen. It is also in contrast with the ethos of the other two Abrahamic religions, both of which still adhere to "an eye for an eye". Some here seem very intent on attacking the Pope and the Church no matter what is said. While the present Pope was still Cardinal Ratzinger he was as much opposed to the illegal, immoral, and unConstitutional attack on Iraq as John Paul II was. The Vatican denounced the latest Israeli aggression, and should they be asked, they will be against the illegal, immoral, unConstitutional, and unChristian planned nuclear devastation of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Unjustified criticism of the Pope and the Church, and Catholic morality, will cause many to decide whether they need to choose between the Church, and a particular political party.

Her murderers were evil, OBVIOUSLY, and she forgave them. That is not the same thing as saying all Muslims are evil, just her killers.
