The Average American Home Now Has More Television Sets Than People

Researchers: Homes have more TVs than people

NEW YORK (AP) -- The average American home now has more television sets than people.

That threshold was crossed within the past two years, according to Nielsen Media Research. There are 2.73 TV sets in the typical home and 2.55 people, the researchers said.

With televisions now on buses, elevators and in airport lobbies, that development may have as much to do with TV's ubiquity as an appliance as it does conspicuous consumption. The popularity of flat-screen TVs now make it easy to put sets where they haven't been before.

"American children and adolescents spend 22 to 28 hours per week viewing television, more than any other activity except sleeping. By the age of 70 they will have spent 7 to 10 years of their lives watching TV."
-- The Kaiser Family Foundation

Put a whopping $2 on it( worked fine, color, complete with remote)....didn't sell. Tried to give it to all my neighbors, no takers......everyone had more than they needed, Hard to believe!

4. Percent of households
in America that have TV's is between 98-99%. Not hard to believe. At my mother's house where a sister and nephew live there are three people and five TV sets.

I'm trying to counter that. Haven't had TV in over a decade.

"Everybody’s got values . . . The thing that frightens me is the way that an eroding public school system . . . and television on all over the place is leading to a steady dumbing down of the American public and a corrosion of basic critical thinking in the population."
-- Jamie Raskin, American University law professor, November 2004 on the Democracy Now! radio program

5. i think my stats tilted the results . . .
my boyfriend and i have 5 tvs (2 battery powered for hurricanes), 3 vcrs, 1 dvd and 2 dvrs . . . he does not watch as much news/commentary as i do so he DOES need his own tv . . . or 2. we also have 4 computers (2 old ones we have not recycled yet) with 4 monitors and 3 printers (one 3-in-1). we're bad! actually it's mostly a testament to the fact that we are both pack rats and can't seem to part with possessions . . . even obsolete ones. :eyes:

7. Sounds like they were looking at my mother's house...
Her and my grandmother have a total of four TVs. One in the living room, one for each of them in their bedrooms and the fourth in my mother's computer room.

On the other hand, my family could almost tilt the stats as well. We have five TVs. One in the living room, the kids each have hand-me-down TVs in their bedrooms and hubby has a small combo TV/DVD player for his truck.
