Wallace: "I felt as if a mountain was coming down in front of me. "

Following today's buzz generating conversation with Bill Clinton, Chris Wallace shared some of his post-interview thoughts with FishbowlDC:

I was delighted to get the chance to interview former President Clinton. This was the first one-on-one sitdown he's ever given "Fox News Sunday" during our 10 years on the air.

The groundrules were simple--15 minutes--to be divided evenly between questions about the Clinton Global Initiative and anything else I wanted to ask.

I intended to keep to the groundrules. In fact--I prepared 10 questions--5 on the CGI and 5 on other issues.

...

Then--I asked him about his Administration's record in fighting terror--fully intending to come back to CGI later (as indeed I did).

I asked what I thought was a non-confrontational question about whether he could have done more to "connect the dots and really go after al Qaeda."

I was utterly surprised by the tidal wave of details--emotion--and political attacks that followed.

The President was clearly stung by any suggestion that he had not done everything he could to get bin Laden. He attacked right-wingers--accused me of a "conservative hit job"--and even spun a theory I still don't understand that somehow Fox was trying to cover up the fact that NewsCorp. chief Rupert Murdoch was supporting his Global Initiative. I still have no idea what set him off.
Former President Clinton is a very big man. As he leaned forward--wagging his finger in my face--and then poking the notes I was holding--I felt as if a mountain was coming down in front of me.

The President said I had a smirk. Actually--it was sheer wonder at what I was witnessing.

3. Check his shorts for "tracks!"
I really can't imagine that FOX and Wallace were really interested in the "Global Initiative." Good for Bill! He knows that they were going to rough him up, so he got some good shots in. No matter what he did, they would edit and go after him. But this might play to our favor.

Its too bad that the "retired" president has to do this. Where are the elected Democrats? How about standing up against Bush*'s terror bill this week?

4. Gee, former Prez is asked, basically, why did you allow 9/11?
Why on earth would he get upset at being asked that? Go figure.

5. Oh sure it was, Chrissywissy.
You were just asking the most innocent, nonpolitical questions in the whole wide world. Imagine your shock and amazement when Clinton actually said 'enough's enough' and took your whole network to task for its unrelenting support of Neocons. Why, all you said was, 'it's a nice day today, isn't it Mr. President?' and Big Dawg went off on one. He went loco for nooooo reason. You must have been terrified. That's why you had a self-satisfied smirk planted across your face. Sheer terror.

Doesn't Clinton realize that Fox is the most fair and balanced network in the world? Why, it says so right in the corporate motto.

39. Exactly! As Clinton would say, "It's a big load of hooey!"
I asked what I thought was a non-confrontational question about whether he could have done more to "connect the dots and really go after al Qaeda."

Wallace will have nightmares about this for the rest of his life.

10. "fully intending to come back to CGI later" --as a high school teacher, I
hear excuses like this all the time. Talk is cheap and his after the fact excuses don't even address the main point. He asked a man to his face that he dropped the ball on chasing down the worst mass murderer in American history. You do that, expect a passionate response.

And a "tidal wave of details" must've been truly frightening to a guy who's only used to having his facts diluted.

as deaths in Iraq have surpassed the tally of those killed on 9/11/2001.

These Faux idiots are so accustomed to getting away with boorish behavior, it truly shocks them when a Dem, especially a former President, stands up to their bullying tactics.

25. Too Bad BC didn't get out the can of Whip Ass
And spray down that little creep. Isn't Chris Wallace embarrassed to talk about how frightened he was? Isn't that kinda wimpy and non-macho. Apparently Mr. Wallace's greatest concern was the "smirk" comment. I guess Fox News Folk don't "smirk" b/c that could be gay, which is not cool b/c no one at FOX is gay, of course.

And what "did he not get" about Clinton's comment about Rupert Murdock. Duh, they both are raising money for the same thing and this makes the Fox News Neanderthals, I mean viewers, jittery. So, Clinton was making the point that Fox made Chris ask the question so that Rupert wouldn't look like he was having too much fun with Clinton. :toast:

Jayzus, I wish we had more mountains out there - towering, spewing fire and charisma, drawing the eye inexorably to their sheer power.

Dammit, where are the rest of the Dems????

Obama's too green yet. Edwards still feels unpolished. Kerry feels tarnished somehow. We desperately need more towering mountains.

I miss the Big Dawg!
