2. Why do they need to?
I'll never understand why in a situation designed to generate money for worthy causes, that people feel like an artist needs to make an explicit political statement. This is to benefit the people of New Orleans. How would they possibly benefit by an explicitly political statement from the performers? If there's a valid benefit to be had from this other than making people like us go "YEAH!!!" or generating hundreds of "Billie Joe Armstrong for president!!!!" posts on DU then I'm open to hearing them. But at this point who is going to be swayed or benefit from a political statement during that forum? Green Day has spent the past 2 years and an entire album making explicitly political statements with their music and their actions and in interviews. If they want to take on occassion just to generate some money across the board from people of all political stripes, why shouldn't they without having to feel like they need to at the same time create blog fodder?

I'm not saying this is what you were saying, but your post just reminded me of the possibility of the endless bashing here on DU if these guys DON'T make a political statement.

3. If neither Bono or Armstrong manage to work a "Fuck George Bush"
or something to that effect into their performances, they will be crucified on DU for caving in to Bush and the neocons.

Not everything in life is about making a political statement.

Post-nipplegate, this is.

On edit: Did I say edit? I meant censor.

6. Bono wont directly endanger the one campain
by making a statement like that.

I suspect he will say something indirect.

Green Day just might however.

7. The Rolling Stones did an NFL concert and didn't say anything
during the concert but their song "Sweet Neocon" speaks volumes.

8. Check out Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters on tour
he's dropping the hammer on Bush and the neo-cons. And the cons are non too happy about it:

9. Bono? Are you kidding? He is nothing but a bootlicker for the far right.
He wouldn't peep a word about the war. He and his shitty band jet around the world with their tired, faux rebellion -- they wouldn't risk their millions in the controversy of coming out against the war.

The Dixie Chicks wipe the floor with this mealy-mouthed trash.

11. Agree with you; especially since he purchased Forbes magazine
Bono is nothing more than a lousy egomaniacal opportunist.

10. The Edge has done quite a bit trying to raise New Orleans from the ashes..
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/05/05/btsc.callebs.edge/index.html

I would imagine that U2 will make some sort of plea for the survivors of Katrina, since that's one of the reasons they are appearing tonite.
