Britain plays the role in thios debacle, but I found this shirt to be absolutely hilarious. I cant source this because it was left on my myspace, but i had to share!

was applied. "Photoshopped" is a snappy neologism that immediately delivers the message. You "get it" right away.

Sorry to say, but English (and American English in particular) changes to accommodate such usage. I work for Literacy Volunteers and it's very hard to explain all of our idioms to foreign language speakers, but there it is.

There are lots of grammatical sins against the English language, that is certain. But this doesn't bother me so much.

31. Okay, normally I'd stay out of this...

...but really, we all use the phrase "Photoshopped". Just like we all use phrases like "she xeroxed it" and "can you get me the scotch tape".

And remember: the reason it's not "right" is because the corporations say so.

Personally I'm having a hard time taking the wishes of the corporate elite seriously, especially on an issue of language usage. These are the same people who have mangled the language and general usage beyond belief with their ad campaigns, and with their ridiculous mealy-mouthed corporate pronouncements -- not to mention the mealy-mouthed communications that are inflicted within the corporation as well. These are also the same people who try to patent seeds, then refuse to let farmers grow crops from seeds they've saved. A pox on them.

In fact, now that this exchange reminds me, I'm going to make it a point to use these terms whenever possible. And I do it, knowing that it is not hurting *anybody at all*.

All it does is raise brand awareness.

Oops, maybe I won't do that. :-)

32. Hee - "scotch tape". When I first moved to the UK

and asked for scotch tape one day at work, all I got were blank looks. The big brand in Britain is made by a company called Sello, so of course it's referred to as "sello tape". I didn't get the "sello" thing at first and thought people were calling it "cellar tape". Hilarity inevitably ensued...

Also, all vacuum cleaners are generally referred to as "hoovers" in the UK, whatever the name on the actual cleaner is, and I'll just bet the Hoover company loves all that free advertising. As you said, brand awareness.
