CNN: AARP Ad running there Urges People ..."DON'T VOTE!"

Ad goes through a whole bunch of multi-cultural and random age actors urging people "DON'T VOTE!"

The "Punch line" of the Ad is: "Don't vote until you know where your Candidate Stands on the Issues!"

But...the overall Message is "Don't Vote." A BAD MARKETING CAMPAIGN by AARP or a "Clever Ad" that will catch voters attention by being the ANTI-VOTE AD?

5. I disagree. The first time I heard it my ears perked up to see

why anyone would be telling me not to vote. BUT when they got to the punch line, we are told not to vote until we know the issues and then they begin to cite the issues. I think it's effective.

I heard it again a few minutes ago and again I stopped to listen. So I think it gets people's attention because of the Don't Vote call.

People 50+ are more likely to vote. If they are AARP members they have been exhorted time and again to vote, call their congressional reps, etc in support of AARP platforms. Saying "don't vote" breaks through the clutter. Based on 30+ years of marketing experience, I can safely say that no likely voters will be dissuaded by this ad.

6. Just today, I received an application

from AARP. I wrote on the application that I will never forget their complicity in the Medicare bill, voted on in November 2003 and requested they take me off their mailing list NOW.

So, this ad does not surprise me in the least.

7. If a person's attention span

cannot focus for the 1 minute it takes to get to the message of that commercial and chanting "don't vote" can keep them away from the polls,they're not too bright and probably not going to vote Democratic anyway.

This add will take advantage of the natural human instict to do the opposite of what they have been told to do. Now, it may work to our advantage with RW morons as they like to be told what to do, liberals are like cats :D

17. The words "Don't Vote" run counter to what media consumers

are used to hearing, which is to vote. But they're used to hearing encouragement to vote. They are not used to being told "Don't Vote". The words will get people's attention just in time to deliver the punchline, just as they are at peak interest.

I give it a B- because the same two words could be misconstrued or will be viewed as a call to work even harder as a citizen to first learn the issues and get to know the candidate as well as having to get up off their fat asses and actually go to the poll at the peril of missing the latest episode of whatever.

18. I think it's an excellent ad.

Too many ill-informed people vote for the wrong person and the wrong reason. Like voting for the guy you'd like to have a beer with. Here in Virginia George Allen has the reputation of being a "nice guy". I certainly hope people will become informed, not just regarding the issues, but to the character of the candidates.

People who will vote republican if there are terror threats right before the election or gas prices go down are ill-informed and irresponsible. They should stay home!
