Keith Olbermann: "A textbook definition of cowardice"

A textbook definition of cowardice

Keith Olbermann comments on Bill Clinton's Fox News interview

SPECIAL COMMENT
By Keith Olbermann
Anchor, 'Countdown'
MSNBC

Updated: 8:29 p.m. ET Sept 25, 2006

The headlines about them are, of course, entirely wrong.

It is not essential that a past president, bullied and sandbagged by a monkey posing as a newscaster, finally lashed back.

It is not important that the current President’s portable public chorus has described his predecessor’s tone as “crazed.”

Our tone should be crazed. The nation’s freedoms are under assault by an administration whose policies can do us as much damage as al Qaida; the nation’s marketplace of ideas is being poisoned by a propaganda company so blatant that Tokyo Rose would’ve quit.

<snip>

You did not try.

You ignored the evidence gathered by your predecessor.

You ignored the evidence gathered by your own people.

Then, you blamed your predecessor.

That would be a textbook definition, Mr. Bush, of cowardice.

To enforce the lies of the present, it is necessary to erase the truths of the past.

That was one of the great mechanical realities Eric Blair—writing as George Orwell—gave us in the book “1984.”

The great philosophical reality he gave us, Mr. Bush, may sound as familiar to you, as it has lately begun to sound familiar to me.

"The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power...

"Power is not a means; it is an end.

"One does not establish a dictatorship to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship.

"The object of persecution, is persecution. The object of torture, is torture. The object of power… is power."

Earlier last Friday afternoon, before the Fox ambush, speaking in the far different context of the closing session of his remarkable Global Initiative, Mr. Clinton quoted Abraham Lincoln’s State of the Union address from 1862.

"We must disenthrall ourselves."

Mr. Clinton did not quote the rest of Mr. Lincoln’s sentence.

He might well have.

"We must disenthrall ourselves and then we shall save our country."

And so has Mr. Clinton helped us to disenthrall ourselves, and perhaps enabled us, even at this late and bleak date, to save our country.

The "free pass" has been withdrawn, Mr. Bush.

You did not act to prevent 9/11.

We do not know what you have done to prevent another 9/11.

You have failed us—then leveraged that failure, to justify a purposeless war in Iraq which will have, all too soon, claimed more American lives than did 9/11.

You have failed us anew in Afghanistan.

And you have now tried to hide your failures, by blaming your predecessor.

And now you exploit your failure, to rationalize brazen torture which doesn’t work anyway; which only condemns our soldiers to water-boarding; which only humiliates our country further in the world; and which no true American would ever condone, let alone advocate.

And there it is, Mr. Bush:

Are yours the actions of a true American?

34. Bill Wasn't The First
President Clinton spoke the truth about Bush's inaction regarding bin Laden before 9/11, just as Keith Olbermann said, but Bill wasn't the first to point out those facts.
I wrote a book about Bush's 9/11 failure, when he loitered around like a slacker on Oxy—then ran away like Cheney from a draft notice.
And all of the warnings before the four attacks and the zero response from the Decider are documented—Bush did nothing.

45. Welcome to DU!
And congratulations on getting your book published. One of the things President Clinton is being praised for is being one of the first "leaders" of the Democratic party to publicly speak the truth that dare not be spoken about Junior's failures. Prior to this, the "democratic leadership" simply handed the issue of 9/11 over to the Republicans, and took the verbal beating as if it were deserved (when anyone with brains knew better). I believe they thought they were "being supportive of the President" instead of realizing they were supporting a King. :(

13. I loved how he used 1984 so eloquently
since I have used it so many times for years now
here on DU to try to tell people what was really going on
that history and the "memory hole" were getting to close to the novel.
That the lie was becoming reality for some until
All the reports that have gone down that hole that
we have to bring up again and again to remind the readers here of
the truth, reality and history that has surrounded them.

NOW THEY WANT TO LEGALIZE TORTURE
AND RETROACTIVELY FORGIVE THE ONES
THAT ORDERED IT AND DID IT.

I know, myself and others here have put these words from 1984 numerous times.

The manipulation of news and also the army's lies, the economic lies are similar given by this cabal are similar to
the manufacturing of shoes or chocolate in 1984. The changing enemies, the never ending war, the list goes on and on until
you either buy into or revolt and have to shout out the truth no matter what the consquences.

Thank you Keith.

28. It has long been known that "the end justifies the means" fails because
... the means BECOME the end.

Such is the power of (consequentialist) rationalization - do what you want and then collect rationales. As always, the most corrupting rationale is some 'greater good' than the 'small evil' chosen. Thus, our world fills up wih small evils until we're swimming in an ocean of evils.

There are no ends, only means. So dirty means are simply dirty means, justifying nothing.

The country I grew up in in the 50s would have NEVER not seen the parallels. Every grade schooler I knew was tutored in fascism and propaganda. Orwell's 1984 was on every school's required reading list. Joe McCarthy only got so far and was nailed.

I continue to wonder where the hell that country went.

32. Interesting tag that K.O. puts at the end: "Good night and good luck."
The famous tag of Edward R. Murrow--famous most of all for his exposure of Sen. McCarthy and McCarthyism, in that other era of lies and fearmongering.

A quite deliberate tribute to courageous journalism--and to the model that all journalists should be looking to, for inspiration!
