It's a slightly conspiratorial thought.

Subject line: Looking at Keith's flashback (pg 2 of the transcript) makes me wonder

"if the Lewinsky scandal were manufactured simply to keep Clinton from going after Binladin. That would mean Clinton was actually being effective, and the Bushistas and their neocon footsoldiers wanted to make sure Osama stayed at large until the big plan.

Who turned the political discourse of this nation on its head for two years?

Who corrupted the political media?

Who made it impossible for us to even bring back on the air, the counter-terrorism analysts like Dr. Richard Haass, and James Dunegan, who had warned, at this very hour, on this very network, in early 1998, of cells from the Middle East who sought to attack us, here?

Who preempted them in order to strangle us with the trivia that was, “All Monica All The Time”?

This is a very intriguing thought -

I think that impeaching Clinton was primarily to get even for the legacy of Republoans meaning Nixon AND to create chaos to gain the biggest win possible in 2000 (meaning having to steal the least amount of votes) and to be able to run on a platform of bringing honor and integrity back to the White House.

It is very obvious that they always try to come up with six supplemental benefits for each primary strategy - so staging and prepping bin Laden by distraction is quite possible as a primary reason.

It looking at it retroactively, they must have been really ticked that Clinton was as proactive as he was with the help of Clarke, Cohen, and many others AND it makes me wonder if they ever considered suiciding Clarke.

They should be impeached and fired just for letting Clarke go and not listening to Albright-Clinton.

Looking again retroactively, they couldn't cherry pick what they adopted from the Clinton WH, so they rejected everything.

They should be impeached and fired just for refusing to adopt Clinton initiatives.

2. The Repugs intentionally thwarted Clinton's anti-terrorism agenda
But I still think it was for purely political reasons; their base was dead set against everything Clinton tried to do to get bin Laden and put better anti-terrorism tools in place. (See this thread from 1998 for freeper statements at the time.)

But while I'm not ready to put the tinfoil hat on yet, I think the point is reinforced: either the Republicons intentionally distracted this nation from the threat to serve their interests later, or they were so hellbent on their own political careers that they utterly failed to recognize the threat, well into Bush**'s time in office. There's no third way to view it.

4. just exactly what I was going to say. My husband and I have
thought that all of the time. Too much of the Linda Tripp and (whatever her first name is) Goldberg. I think it was planned by others, perhaps, but carried out by the three "ladies".

8. And at a certain point Ann C entered the picture - mostly operating
for Starr along with Isikoff.

When you lump Lewinsky, Tripp, and Lucianne, don't forget Matt Drudge.

6. I don't think anybody ever said the scandal was manufacture for that

if the Lewinsky scandal were manufactured simply to keep Clinton from going after Binladin . . . .

The Lewinsky scandal was manufactured to give the GOP a lame excuse to pass articles of impeachment. There was no other thought or reason behind it.

They were not thinking about Osama. They were not thinking about Iraq. There were thinking only about impeaching Clinton for any reason they could find, even a bad one.

9. The PNAC letter to Clinton asking him to invade Iraq was
Edited on Tue Sep-26-06 09:03 AM by higher class
written in 1998 at the same time PNAC took their one page ad to promote their position. That letter and ad did not get written the evening before.

I agree that the Republican Congress was only focused on impeachment - taking orders from someone because at times, in the early days. you could tell that the Reps and Senators didn't even have their talking points in order. Hatch, for one, stumbled repeatedly when a microphone was placed in front of him. Of course, they hadn't entrapped Clinton, yet - so they couldn't fall back on legal aspects - in the early hours of the scandal, it was all about morality and being distracted when these paid government employees conspired against Clinton.

The hand holders with the House of Saud were/are the Bushes and the Carlyles and oil companies. If we ever have proof that they collaborated with certain Saudi Arabians (and certain Israelis?) to set up their 'Pearl Harbor' for the oil companies and their representatives, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, etc. - we might find out when their protections of bin Laden started. He was CIA at one time. When did the CIA and bin Laden separate?

11. I would add Jim Warren of the Chicago Tribune and the other
'journalists' who appeared with him on the Ingrham show - a show set up by GE/NBC specifically for the purpose of smearing Clinton. Jim Warren and two or three others were on continually - snearling morality at the public and chuckling with Laura.
