An edifying return
Bill Clinton's media blitz is all too revealing
September 26, 2006
To get as much attention as Bill Clinton has in recent days, ex-presidents normally have to die. Even though it was hardly a slow news weekend, Clinton was ubiquitous, turning up everywhere outside of cable community access shows, nominally to talk about his “Global Initiative” but actually to pontificate about what's now on his mind.
The effect could not have been more edifying. As smart as he obviously is, President No. 42 still seems fundamentally unable to pull back and see his presidency as others do. And so he largely absolves himself from any blame for the 9/11 terrorist attacks, even though there is massive blame to go around for two (or more) administrations.
Meanwhile, he reacts to tough but routine questions about his White House tenure by taking his massive persecution complex out of storage and putting it on full, depressing display. A long profile in the Sept. 18 New Yorker confirmed that Clinton continues to see his treatment by the media and his Republican critics as akin to the 27 years Nelson Mandela spent in solitary in a South African prison for fighting apartheid.
We hope such a claim makes even Clinton's many admirers shake their heads. This is self-pity taken to a demented extreme. http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20060926/news_lz1ed26bottom.html
