In fact, when Afghanistan collapsed into chaos after the Soviets pulled out, the CIA supported the Taliban because they saw them as the most organized and disciplined of the competing factions. At least that's what I heard on a BBC documentary.

I don't know who's funding them now. Saudi Arabia, maybe?
