Teacher canned after student sees nude sculpture @ Dallas Museum trip
Teacher reprimanded after student sees nude art on museum trip

Associated Press

FRISCO — School board members have voted to not renew the contract of a veteran art teacher who was reprimanded after one of her fifth-grade students saw a nude sculpture during a school trip to a museum.

Sydney McGee has been on paid administrative leave from Fisher Elementary School since Friday, said her attorney Rogge Dunn.

McGee's contract runs through the end of the school year and it was unclear whether she would remain on leave until then. Her attorney said he would wait for written confirmation and clarification from the school district to decide how to proceed.

He said McGee, a 28-year veteran teacher, was upset about the Monday decision.

McGee has said her troubles started after taking 89 students on a school field trip to the Dallas Museum of Art in April.

15. Hmmmm, would that be called statue-phelia?
I suppose it might, but only if one ACTED on the impulse!!!!

The only incident I can recall is that stupid movie where the store mannequin came to life...but then, ya gotta ask yourself, what's art, and what's drek??

12. Art? pffffffffffft.
Kids don't need art. All they need to know is how to count and run the machinery at the factory that makes cheap shit to sell at Walmart. Or how to run the cash register at the walmart.

13. Jesus H. Christ--why am I not out raping and murdering in my old age?
I grew up in the golden age of the "Field Trip." Museums galore, historical sites, science outings, even a trip to meet the guv'nah!

We saw nekkid paintings, nekkid sculptures, and all sorts of representations of blood, gore and violence in oils and other media. We were, dare I say, EXPOSED to ideas!

So why is it that my generation isn't irretrievably warped as a consequence?

19. They has National Geographic in my day,
They were actually allowed in School libraries, gee. Even in those provincial days in Texas not far where this terrible transgression occurred. Wonder what's changed.

26. No more museums, then...
There are nude paintings and sculptures in almost all of them.

No more gym class either. Students may see nudity or partial nudity in the changing room.

And cover the bare legs of the tables and desks-- they're suggestive (the Victorians actually believed this).

Really, how po-dunk is this decision? Texas' reputation is already bad enough in the culture department.

27. They want to ruin this teacher's career!
The district rejected McGee's request in August to transfer to another Frisco school. They said they didn't want to give her a chance to move elsewhere without addressing other issues, including lesson-plan preparation.

:grr:
