"Argumentum ad numerum (argument or appeal to numbers). This fallacy is the attempt to prove something by showing how many people think that it's true. Well, maybe 70% of Americans are wrong!

This fallacy is very similar to argumentum ad populum, the appeal to the people or to popularity. When a distinction is made between the two, ad populum is construed narrowly to designate an appeal to the opinions of people in the immediate vicinity, perhaps in hope of getting others (such as judges) to jump on the bandwagon, whereas ad numerum is used to designate appeals based purely on the number of people who hold a particular belief. Hence Authority figures are looked upon as always supplying the correct and most beneficial information to the general public.

can't wait to see how long after the election before prices skyrocket. in the interim, watch what happens to heating oil/natural gas prices as it begins to cool off. my guess is that those prices do not follow those of gas/diesel oil (or is diesel the same as heating oil, and, if so, is there any way for the market to distinguish between the two?)

I don't pay much attention to heating oil/natural gas prices as I live in an area of Texas that doesn't get that cold in the winter, and my home is mostly electric, save for my dryer and water heater, so I really don't know the answer to your last question. Pretty sure someone on DU would know, though.
