TRENTON -- Making school superintendent pay and perks more public will help save taxpayers money and ease New Jersey's property taxes, officials on Tuesday told lawmakers considering how to revamp school funding in the state.
State Education Department officials urged lawmakers to support a bill that would, among other things, require school chief contracts be posted on the Internet and public hearings be held before their contracts are adopted.
"People need to know how much they're paying and what for," Jessica G. deKoninck, an Education Department legislative services director, told a special legislative committee charged with recommending a new school funding formula by Nov. 15.
The pitch came after the state Commission of Investigation found many school chief contracts loaded with perks and compensation often hidden from public view. For instance, it found a Salem County superintendent had a salary of $179,830, but compensation for insurance, sick leave, pension contributions, clothing and other perks shoved his income to $246,950.
