Torture: It's not about them. It's about us - it's about who we are
and how we define ourselves.

1. Agreed 100% I do NOT want torture
Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 01:16 AM by Erika
I think the republicans demean our country by wanting it. Let all those who want torture try it out first (on themselves)

2. Wise Leaders of old have told of GOOD TREATMENT to Prisoners

5. What is it about the "golden rule" that everybody has forgotten?
It's supposed to trump all other behavior in a civilized world.

7. Torture is a line that once crossed
leads to nothing but ruin and destruction. Once that line is crossed, we will have no moral compass to guide us, no standard to look up to, nothing that sets us apart from the others. If Bush gets his way, we will have lived to see the end of a democratic America, to be replaced by a far, far uglier, and more dangerous country.

For those of you who believe, may God have mercy on us, if we can't stop this sociopath. If not enough of us care, then the rest of us will be doomed to share the fate of the minority. An America which has strayed so far from the borders of civilized behavor, and ethical behavior, is not the America I was born in. I will consider my options, moving to another country, or trying to help in the fight to protect the America I have known for over sixty years. My prayers now are that what I do will help others.

8. Not about whether THEY are human, but whether WE are human.
I was having the same thought today.

9. the REASON behind the 8th Amendment HOLDS even if
it technically does not apply to non-Americans.

If we torture non-Americans because there is a "good reason" for it - then the same would apply for AMERICANS if we have a "good reason". You can't get around that.

The reason we don't torture Americans, even the most heinous criminals!, is exactly the thing that prevents (or should prevent) us from torturing anyone.

10. It is insane
that anyone is arguing in favor of torture for any reason.

So much of the argument from the other side has to do with "what kind of people" the victims are; as well as bogus claims about how useful the "information" is. "What kind of people we are" is the only question that truly gets answered by this practice.
