That was the same period of time when the group that has become known as the neoconservatives left the democratic party, and became republicans. One of the reasons they left the democratic party was because of their view that America had lost respect due to the defeat in Vietnam. In 1980, they found the Reagan campaign to be a vehicle to transport them to positions of power. A large part of their attempts to manipulate public perception was to paint the democrats as weak on defense, and themselves as a warrior class.

Between 1980 and 2000, the republican party in general, and neocons in particular, continued to use the strong defense bit whenever possible. I was amazed in 2000 when some of my co-workers, who were interested in politics and had MSWs and PhDs, believed that defense issues favored Bush over Gore. They were surprised to hear that Gore had a military record to be proud of, while Bush had been an irresponsible pampered pup.

Karl Rove, of course, understood the advantages of telling huge lies in the campaign. And in 2002's mid-term elections, he would front for the neocon agenda of focusing the national fear into a hatred for "terrorists."

3. I'll tell you what I believe

It began when the Dept of Homeland Security debate was taking place. As you know, Democrats were calling for the reorganization of intelligence services. As any good Republicon would, Rove saw that as his opening. This was the opportunity to create a huge bungling beaurocracy, where cronyism could run rampant. Many of us believed Sen Byrd when he warned that DHS would be a huge disaster because we saw what they were attempting to do, but Democrats wen along with the concept.

Then, in anticipation of the '02 election the poison pill was added to the enabling legislation; 170,000 employees in the new DHS would lose their job protection. Now here's the really funny (not ha-ha funny) part, the reason for the Republicon position on the labor rights issue was they wanted to have the flexibility to hold people accountable for failure!!!!!!!!!:rofl: Don Rumsfeld must be part of the best fucking union on the planet.:mad:

When Dems took a position against the bill because of the labor rights issue, they played into Rove's filthy little paws.

and I will never forget the hissing and booing directed at Bill and Hillary Clinton at that benefit concert about 6weeks after 9-11. I think that moment crystallized for me that the Rove spin was working. And then it was transferred onto the whole Dem party.
