Governor's lead widens in two polls
Angelides camp says there's still time for a turnaround
Tom Chorneau, Chronicle Sacramento Bureau

Wednesday, September 27, 2006

(09-27) 04:00 PDT Sacramento -- Two new statewide polls show Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger widening his lead over Democrat Phil Angelides with just six weeks to go before the election.

Dominating the news in recent weeks with splashy bill-signing ceremonies and celebrity news events, Schwarzenegger has jumped to a 17 percentage-point advantage over the state treasurer, according to a survey from the Public Policy Institute of California -- an increase of 4 points since August.

The Field Poll found that Schwarzenegger has improved 2 percentage points since July and now leads 44 to 34 percent among likely voters. Perhaps even more telling is that nearly 7 out of 10 voters said they think the governor will be re-elected.

Both polls also found only modest support for Angelides among voters in his own party; the governor had surprising strength among key groups and areas of the state considered Democratic strongholds.

With a coalition of unions beginning a multi-million-dollar campaign against the governor this week and the much anticipated debate between the two men set for next week, Angelides' supporters insist they still have time to turn the momentum.

1. Phil has run of the poorest campaigns to date.

With that said, I do not believe that he id down by 15 points. Still, the fact that Arnie is stuck in the mid forties is evidence that the Demcratic base still is very unsure of Phil. That is quite sad because Arnie is just acting like a moderate becaue there is an election. Come January he will be up to his old tricks again.

Arnie's "flashy bill signing ceremonies" are just sickening. Sadly enough, this showsmanship seems to be working.

2. I believe Arnie will probably get re-elected
I will of course vote for Angelides but frankly I'm not seeing much bad about Schwarzenegger save for the fact he's Republican. Angelides doesn't seem to have done much to show that his administration will be a great deal different than Schwarzenegger's which means that people get to choose between a known known and an unknown known.

3. You know Arnie campaigns to the left, and moves hard to the right
once he has won, right? There is plenty not to like about him.

5. He did the same thing in 2003.
And people seem to be falling for it again.

6. Absolutely; I never said I liked him, but he's not a Bushbot.

My problem with him is he's all over the map. One day he's vilifying teachers and nurses as "special interests" the next day he's cool with legalizing industrial hemp.

Stem cell research, medical marijuana, environmental initiatives, keeping the CA National Guard out of Iraq, one can hardly say he's toeing the RW party line.

Hello fellow San Diegan!! :hi:

7. Angelides is a weak candidate...
...and Ahnold is running as a progressive. Ahnold will walk away with it.

Westly had a better shot than Angelides but that didn't happen.
