Pelosi: Republican Congress Is a Rubber Stamp for Failed Policies of the Bush Administration
WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid and other House and Senate Democratic leaders today at a news conference to discuss the Republican Rubber Stamp Congress. Below are Pelosi's remarks:
"Thank you very much Leader Reid for inviting us here to talk about this Republican Rubber Stamp Congress, a Congress which is a rubber stamp for the failed policies of the Bush Administration. Not only in terms of our national security, as you pointed out, but in terms of the economic security of America's families. This Rubber Stamp Republican Congress has increased the national debt enormously and decreased the purchasing power for America's families. It has missed opportunities to lessen the middle-class squeeze; in fact, it has tightened the squeeze because it is a rubber stamp.
"It is the most closed and corrupt Congress in history, being a rubber stamp for the Bush Administration, in two areas where that all comes together: Medicare and Social Security. This Republican Rubber Stamp Congress put forth a Medicare prescription drug bill that put pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies before seniors. Seniors are paying more at the corner pharmacy under this plan.
"Democrats have a prescription for change. We want to give the Secretary of Health and Human Services the authority to negotiate for lower prices and use those funds to close the donut hole, where seniors continue to pay a premium yet receive no benefit.
"When it comes to another aspect of retirement security and the economic security of America's families, Social Security, Members of this Congress have been a rubber stamp, blindly following the lead of President Bush on the subject of privatizations of Social Security.
"Democrats have fought the president on this, and we will continue the fight. We need to continue the fight because the Republicans in Congress have made it very clear that their intention is, if they win again, to bring up the privatization issue. The President talks about it, his staff talks about it, and the leaders in Congress talk about it. The Republican leaders in Congress make it very clear, as do the leaders of the committees of jurisdiction.
"There is no doubt that Democrats are proposing a new direction. We have talked about it all along, where we put people first. We are there for the new direction for all Americans, not just the privileged few. When it comes to Social Security, we will save Social Security, stop the raid on the trust fund, and stop privatization.
"We're going to stop the Rubber Stamp Congress of George W. Bush. On Social Security and privatization, the Republican Congress has said, 'Yes, President Bush.' But Democrats say, 'No.'"
