but alas, all the protesting, email and calls to your reps and senators may all be for naught;
Just read at
Glen Greenwald's blog that not only does he expect many Dems to vote for the "torture compromise" bill, but that it's possible that a MAJORITY may support this barbaric legislation. (anybody have any projected vote tallys? Greenwald says Harry Reid is supporting it...)
It this what it all comes down to?
Are that many Dems conscienceless, soulless, heartless, corrupt cowards?
If so, it may not matter who wins in November...Conyers, Boxer, and the few other consistently courageous Dems can't right these wrongs without the support of the other Dems...
I've posted many times that if the Dems don't take back at least one house, that I will emigrate to Canada.
My reasons are many:
Our phones can be tapped with impunity;
The President now has the unchecked powers of an emperor;
Our govt. cannot, will not, protect us from natural disasters, climate change, or attacks on our ports;
Our electoral process is a corrupt sham and has no integrity;
And now, Torture may become "legal" and habeas corpus may be effectively suspended? with the cooperation of the Democrats, who fear appearing weak in an election year!?!
Because of all this, and more, America, like Elvis, has (almost) left the building...
Although I live in a wonderful, fairly progressive community, near my friends and family, that beloved, abstract idea of "The United States of America" created over 200 years ago with the drafting of our Constitution, is on the verge of disappearing completely, being replaced with some neo-con, neo-fascist mutant hybrid of demo-totalitarianism, i.e. tyranny masquerading as democracy...
I cannot in good conscience, continue to pay taxes for Torture, and yet I'm not brave enough to risk the penalties for not doing so...
Although I won't give up without a fight, it seems that my country is leaving me...
...and if that happens, I will leave my country.
For my safety, and my sanity, and that of my family, I will not become an expatriate, but rather, I will become...
A Patriot-In-Exile.
(sorry if this is a little disjointed- I'm typing quickly on my lunch break...)
