Do you ever use the spell check that DU provides?
I'm a little curious because I've been noticing a lot of spelling errors recently, and I have started to wonder whether some of the newer members are aware that this is a convenient tool that DU has incorporated. It is located at the bottom left hand corner of the message board. I am not trying to be an old school marm about this; it's just that I feel that all of us feel a certain pride in the fact that we like our finished product to look and sound like intelligent people were involved in the composition (unlike, let's say, oh...freepers?).

I will admit that when I first joined DU, I posted without properly acquainting myself with many of the conveniences that DU provided, and the spell check was one, so I am just providing a public service. Also it took me about a month to notice the smilies lookup table just above the subject line...spent many an evening wondering where everyone was finding all of those clever little pictures. OK, so I'm a blond.

Anyway, now that you know, no excuses. Let's show anyone who is new and lurking that we have pride in how we express ourselves.

2. You think I spell bad with it?
It would be much worse without it.

Yes, I do but it doesn't catch everything unfortunately.

3. Always!
And I'm slightly crazed that some others don't use it. I've thought of starting a thread about spell-check mistakes, but since it would get buried very quickly, I've never bothered. But I do wish everyone would use it.

P.S. I used spell check and it caught one error.

4. I try to ... but honestly, I usually forget to hit the button

My email program automatically does a spell check when I hit the "send" button and I have the opportunity to correct the errors before the message is actually sent. I wish DU worked the same way: hit the "post message" button and have the spell check kick in, allowing you to make changes before the post is made. :-)

24. Good post and good suggestion. I don't use it myself because I
don't need it, but you're right, it would behoove some of us DUers to avail themselves of that
feature. It really burns my ass when we criticise the 'freepers' for this or that and can't
express it with semi-proper spelling and grammar. But I'm an old phart and probably nobody gives
a shit what I think anyway.

45. Rarely... only when I am unsure of the correct spelling.
Of course, my spelling is usually correct without spell-checker.

The problem with spell-checker is that it only corrects words that don't exist. Not words that exist such as there and their or add and ad.

I agree that we should do a better job of spelling because it reflects on us as a whole.

I know that it probably doesn't matter with punctuation and grammar when it is just between friends and family but I still try to use proper English writing including capitalization.

to check definition of words when I am not sure if I have their meaning right before I hit "post message". I will admit that I suck at punctuation. :spank: And I am never sure when to use to/too. I know that I mess that up.

56. I remember seeing your posts, Blue, and they are always great!
The to/too is not so difficult. "Too" always stands for "Also" or "Me Too"...as in, "I like it, too (me too, me also)."

"To" is used in a sentence as a go-to. For instance, "I ran to the car" or "I like to eat ice-cream." In both cases you are going for something, be it a car, or ice-cream (to go for the car, or to go for ice-cream).

The easiest way for me to remember the difference is the pronunciation. If you like it too, it is pronounced with a long sound...tooooooooo.

If you want to go...it is a short sound...to go. Just one "o".

Does this help, or am I being an English teacher pain in the ass here?

54. Sometimes
Overall I'm a pretty good speller, but there are a few words that no matter how many times I look them up, I always misspell them. So, if I'm using one of those particular words, then I'll spell check, because I know I've spelled it wrong as usual.
