Anti-war protestors arrested at Rep. Chabot's office (Cincinnati)
If anyone here has more info on this I'd be interested in hearing it. The article in today's Cincy Enquirer was only three brief paragraphs and no pics.

Chabot protestors arrested
THE ENQUIRER

Five adults and two juveniles were arrested peacefully and charged with criminal trespassing Wednesday night after a seven-hour sit-in at the downtown office of U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot.

The group arrived at Chabot's office at the Carew Tower around 1 p.m., stating they would not leave until Chabot signed a pledge to end the U.S. war and occupation in Iraq. During that time, supporters of Greater Cincinnati Declaration of Peace drifted in and out of the office. Chabot's staff accommodated the group with refreshments and bathroom keys.

They were first asked to leave around 6:30 p.m. Security was called at 7 p.m. and about an hour later, Cincinnati police showed up.

1. Chabot's Office
They were an affinity group that had been planning it for weeks. All day supporters were outside the office with signs and leaflets supporting the action. Chabot's people, the police and media were all notified in advance (only the print media showed up). I was there from 4:30-7 pm. At that time there were about 20 of us outside. The police actually showed up about 5 pm and went inside several times between 5-7 pm. The people inside felt they were going to not be arrested until this morning, so most people left before the arrests. Below is the Tues. email alert sent by the organizers of the action, IJPC: www.ijpc-cincinnati.org

JOIN US OUTSIDE OF THE CAREW TOWER . . .(441 Vine St) anytime bewteen 1pm -6pm on Wed, Sept 27. We hope to swell the crowd around 5pm when Chabot's office closes, the most likely time for an arrest. We invite you to bring cell phones. We will have leaflets complete with the statement of those sitting-in, the Congressional Declaration of Peace, and talking points. We will be inviting passer-by's to call Chabot's office to ask that he sign the Congressional Declaration of Peace

BELOW FIND CITYBEAT BLOG WRITE-UP ABOUT THE ACTION

Tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept 27 in solidarity with people across the United States, a 78-year-old nun, a filmmaker, a 15-year-old high school student, a minister, a recent college graduate, and a newspaper editor are among the people planning a sit-in at U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot’s office Wed., Sept. 27, to protest the war in Iraq.

The group wants Chabot to sign the Congressional Declaration of Peace, which calls for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, the payment of damages for the destruction caused by U.S. forces and the rejection of “pre-emptive war” against Iran or any other nation.

A group of peace activists Monday delivered petitions to Chabot’s office, calling on him to support the Declaration of Peace. The sit-in Wednesday is intended to help him decide.

Peace supporters are invited to gather at 1 p.m. Wednesday near the 441 Vine Street entrance to the Carew Tower, where Chabot’s office is. Supporters are also asked to call Chabot’s office Wednesday at 513-684-2723 to ask him to sign the Declaration of Peace.

5. Worthy?
These are people who met for weeks to explore their commitment to civil disobedience and develop a message to explain that commitment. It was the culmination of a week of action planned and executed by hundreds of people in Cincinnati. I know and work with most of the arrested group in organizing anti-war activities and we had public events everyday from Sept. 21-28. Their actions was beyond worthy. it was a group a people willing to go to jail for their beliefs.

2. Chabot must be realizing that he may not be in office much longer
he was civil to the protesters ...

If the Repukes were not in danger, the protesters would have been kicked out in 10 minutes flat ... and not civilly ...

6. Numbers people
This should have been 500 people in a sit in. We need to choke the system so they're not as likely to bust protesters for the reason of having no permit.

8. More news
Just in from the IJPC email list:

Friends,
Just to let you know-
7 people were arrested at Congressman Chabot's office last night The entered Chabot's office between 1 and 1:30. The office staff were very respectful. However, Congressman Chabot did refuse to sign the Declaration of Peace and the Peaceful 7 refused to leave until he would sign. The police arrived after nine o'clock in full force to take them away (Four officers per person and a riot type squad outside). The two students were released to their parents last night. 4 of the 5 adults were in jail over night. We expect that they will be released on their own recognizance this morning. We expect they will have a court date later.
We owe a debt of gratitude to all 7,who did civil disobedience, to the lawyers volunteering to work with and for them as well as to the supporters who passed out 600 fliers to people walking by and all of you who called Chabot's Office asking that he sign the Declaration of Peace.. If you didn't get to it yesterday. it is not too late. His number is (513)684-2723.

We will keep you posted
