16. I called my Rep yesterday and told him that I never thought I
would ever think, much less say, that I'm glad my father and uncle are dead, and spared this horrible shame and pain. They were WW II vets. My father, a Marine Sgt., in the Pacific, & my uncle who was at Normandy on D Day. Believe me, this would be enough to make them both cry.

17. There are millions of Americans who are still alive who are
"rolling" around too.

Why is it that a few disgusting authoritarian fascist flawed humans get to set the policy?

I am so disgusted with the democrats who are supporting this I'm ready to walk away from the party. I do NOT want some freak-ass republican to say "you democrats support it too", because that's where I part company.

What the hell do we stand for anyway?

22. Supreme Court justices
"Big Brother in the form of an increasingly powerful government and
in an increasingly powerful private sector will pile the records high
with reasons why privacy should give way to national security, to law
and order, to efficiency of operation, to scientific advancement and
the like."

"A people who extend civil liberties only to preferred groups
start down the path either to dictatorship of the right or the left."

Justice William O. Douglas

"The Constitution of the United States is a law for rulers and people, equally in war and in peace,
and covers with the shield of its protection all classes of men, at all times, and under all circumstances. No doctrine, involving more pernicious consequences, was ever invented by the wit of man than that any of its provisions can be suspended during any of the great exigencies of government. Such a doctrine leads directly to anarchy or despotism, but the theory of necessity on which it is based is false; for the government, within the Constitution, has all the powers granted to it, which are necessary to preserve its existence; as has been happily proved by the result of the great effort to throw off its just authority."

Justice David Davis

"Men have discovered no technique for long preserving free government except that the executive be under the law."

Justice Robert H. Jackson

"It is emphatically the province and duty of the judicial department to say what the law is."

Justice John Marshall, Marbury v. Madison.

"The danger to political dissent is acute where the Government attempts to act under so vague a concept as the power to protect 'domestic security.' Given the difficulty of defining the domestic security interest, the danger of abuse in acting to protect that interest becomes apparent."

Justice Powell

"The writ of habeas corpus is the fundamental instrument for safeguarding individual freedom against arbitrary and lawless state action. Its pre-eminent role is recognized by the admonition in the constitution that the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended. U.S. Const. art. I, § 9, cl. 2. The scope and flexibility of the writ -- its capacity to reach all manner of illegal detention -- its ability to cut through barriers of form and procedural mazes -- have always been emphasized and jealously guarded by courts and lawmakers. The very nature of the writ demands that it be administered with the initiative and flexibility essential to insure that miscarriages of justice within its reach are surfaced and corrected.

Justice Fortas, Harris v. Nelson.

"Ultimately all the questions boil down to one -Whether we as a people will try fearfully and futilely to preserve democracy by adopting totalitarian methods, or whether in accordance with out traditions, and our constitution we will have the confidence and courage to be free."

Hugo L. Black
