My God, What Do They Have Planned????
During the 2002 debate of the Iraqi War Resolution, many “sensible” DUers (myself included) suspected that the debate was primarily a “wedge issue”. In other words, we suspected the main reason for the IWR was to force Democrats to vote for the resolution and thus alienate their base. We thought not even Bush would be foolish enough to invade Iraq without a large international coalition behind him.

So now we have legislation that strikes down Habeas Corpus. And, once again, my first instinct is that this is primarily a “wedge issue” – they want us to stay home for the mid-term elections. Well, experience shows that they may time their legislative outrages as wedge issues, but they also mean to use their new powers.

So I ask: what the hell do they have planned that is so awful that they suspect that dissidents will need to be jailed without hearings?

4. I was just wondering the same thing.
I think it's another phase in the overall plan, so I posted about it.

It is to delete you and me when when we become an annoyance. There is no other purpose.

6. The criminalization of dissent
This is the blueprint for it. If there's another terrorist attack, this provides the legal mechanism to declare that criticism of Our Leaders constitutes "material support" for terrorism.

And when dissent is criminalized, why, you can invade Iran, Syria, institute a draft, do whatever you please - because gainsaying it makes you a terrorist.

12. It's pretty obvious, isn't it?
The bill defines "unlawful enemy combatants" as ANYONE "who has engaged in hostilities or who has purposefully and materially supported hostilities against the United States."

That's vague enough to apply it to anyone (including the media) who opposes the war or the administration's policies. We've already seen Cheney and others accuse newspapers of supporting or coddling terrorists simply because they printed articles the administration didn't like.

10. Nothing new
They want to jail dissidents outraged by today's issues. I don't see this as an indication that they are preparing something so wrong that they will need strong-arm authoritarian tactics to survive the political fallout. They just want to jail us in general. Which is not to say that I don't think they are going to do even more outrageous things as time goes on. That's just what they do.
