EVERYONE TAKE A LOOK AT THIS MAN
Edited on Thu Sep-28-06 10:50 AM by LSK

His name is John Conyers.

He held a hearing in the basement on the DOWNING STREET MEMOS where I 1st "met" Cindy Sheehan and Joe Wilson.

He wrote a report on ELECTION FRAUD that much of Mark Crispin Miller based Fooled Again on.

He is one of our best voices in Congress and a great Democrat.

Voting for those House Members who voted for the torture bill PUTS JOHN CONYERS IN THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE.

John Conyers as House Judiciary Committee chair WILL HOLD HEARINGS ON EVERYTHING the Bush Admininstration has done in the past 6 years. He will subpoena people like COLIN POWELL, Condi Rice, Dick Cheney and they will be asked HARD QUESTIONS UNDER OATH.

THIS IS THE GOAL. THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE LONGED FOR ALL THESE YEARS. THIS IS A CONGRESS THAT HOLDS BUSH ACCOUNTABLE.

THIS IS ONLY POSSIBLE WITH A DEMOCRATIC MAJORITY IN THE HOUSE.

4. Yes, but we'll need a special election to replace pro-torture democrats...
after they're indicted for being War Criminals.

So yeah...

Go ahead and vote for pro-torture Democrats for now.

Let's win those seats in The House and Senate and put Conyers in charge of The Judiciary Committee.

But eventually, there are 24 Democrats who will be standing beside Bush and his Republickers at The Hague.

52. Not really, of course
Leaving aside the issue of whether the enactment of the detainee bill is itself a "war crime" that renders individual elected officials who voted for it "war criminals" as a matter of international law, you're never going to see chimpy or any other American officals on trial at the Hague. Neither the US nor Iraq have ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court or otherwise acceded to the court's jurisdiction as a matter of law. Clinton tried at least to sign the treaty, but it was never submitted for ratification and chimpy later rescinded the treaty signing.

Not saying that this is the way it should be, just that it is the way it is...

choice but to give those that voted aye yesterday the benefit of the doubt. I believe that they were doing it for the exact reasons that so many on this board are saying. To avoid looking weak on terrorism and, yes, to cover their asses.

Look at it this way, if every single Democrat had voted against this bill, that would be all we would hear about between now and the election from the pukes. They would be screaming about how they can't get Dems to support any anti-terror legislation because we are weak on defense and have no strategy. Voters could be cajoled into thinking that the Dems really don't have a strategy and really are weak on prosecuting both the war and the terrorists.

My point is that, unless we vote for the Democrats and win back the House, all is lost. WE MUST WIN AND WE MUST PUT CONYERS IN THAT CHAIR!

That's what I've been saying in a flame war I walked into. Should I post a link to it ? I'm not sure if that's against the rules or not.

Anyway, John Conyers represents the district next to me. Really, he represents ALL of us ! I've met him and spoken with him many times, as well as members of his staff. Great people, that work TIRELESSLY for us. NONSTOP They are all over it, ALL of it.

And that , my friend, is what the cowards that are now running this country are afraid of. That's why they are passing these draconian measures today.

Thanks again for posting this !

for torture. I understand what you are trying to do but I have a moral dilemma here that you apparently don't have. So are you asking me to condone an itsy-bitsy amount of torture and the stripping of our rights for a while so that MAYBE it can be turned around later? When's later? We have a congress in which DEMS ALSO have done their share of rubberstamping of the * administration. I want a clean Congress, not one that has to resort to such measures to cover their proverbial asses all the time.

60. There's no guarantee....
...that a democratic majority means instant and dramatic change...sunshine and blue skies every day. We don't know exactly what the dems will do, but we DO know what Bush and his rubberstamping congress will do. That IS a guarantee! If you don't feel good about voting for a democrat...then don't. But, please, go to the polls on November 7 and vote AGAINST a republican!

We all vote whether we go to the polls or not. If you don't vote for the democrat, you've voted for the republican, you've voted to give Bush more power. Does that make you feel good.

The Civil Rights and Women's movement were not driven by promises and guarantees of success. The were driven by hope...the possibility of change. A democratic majority is a possibility for change...and our only hope.

98. I like that photo! Think I'll save it too.
I especially like seeing JC caught by the camera in the act of raising his gavel, getting ready to slam it down with emphasis!

The very image of that motion alone speaks worlds for the possibilities, IMO.

I also like the juxtapositions in this photo, such as JC behind (and literally looking over the shoulder of) JJ, pretty clearly providing us with an image of JC keeping a close watch and wielding some authority even over prominent fellow-black politicians who might be more interested in their own power moves than in truly helping their own people -- or ALL of us, as JC does.

Then there's that caption on the screenshot, reminding everyone of the final act in the last pResidential faux-election ... and how that one state's vote-counting "irregularities" were all it took to perpetuate the reign of the malignant, naked chimperor who has so damaged our nation -- and US.

In general, just the overall impression this picture offers is powerful, IMO. Conyers looking out over all he can survey, eyes on targets and gavel in hand, ready to take action in ways that could be so much more effective and certainly broader than he can manage as things stand now.

It's an image we should think about long and hard as we all go to the polls for the '06 midterms. Why should we do that, even if JC isn't in our district?

Because IF our votes are counted fairly this time -- and I know that's a hope way more than it's a guarantee; IF JC accedes to the chairmanship of the House Judiciary Committee, then we could see things begin to change in a big way in many areas of our government, with this fair and courageous man heading such a powerful committee!

I know that's a lot of "IFs," but there's no way around the "iffiness" of the upcoming election, anyway. Why not bet on something we can have confidence in?

I have concluded that we must do everything we can to improve the chances of getting JC into a more powerful position.

Just think of how he could focus the attention of the entire nation where it ought to be by choosing subjects and targets of hearings and issuing subpoenas.

Think of all the things Conyers could begin to clear up and how many bits of nastiness, treason, and outright criminality of every sort that this administration has committed and which John Conyers might be able to help rectify....

   :dem:

49. It IS depressing, but that's the state of affairs we have to work
with: a media controlled by conservative corporate cronies just itching to paint Democrats as weak on terror; a failure of the American people to use critical thinking to determine that if we use torture, it will put our troops more at risk abroad; a systematic and planned failure by the Republican Party of the very infrastructure of this nation so as to turn all governmental planning over to corporations.

Our democracy is hanging by a thread, while the corporate facists are holding the scissors within inches of the very tendril that is holding together the fabric of the U.S. Constitution.

44. You are absolutley right about this!
Conyers has been collecting volumes of information on the various crimes the * administration and the Rethugs have been commiting in the last six years...

You can bet he would be a VERY busy man if made chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

46. As my mother would say, Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.
We need every last Democrat we can get in both chambers of Congress. We'll deal with the errant spineless ones when we get there.

Otherwise, we lose it all.

John Conyers ... :patriot:

50. Add Henry Waxman to the mix of John Conyers and the black caucus...
and you create a dynamic machine.

With a Democratic majority in the house, Henry Waxman would also be empowered with the big I (investigation) and the big S (subpoena) and could quickly become a force to reckon with; he's done his homework, too.

Truth, Justice and Equality are not pipe dreams. I want my country back!

58. Scenario: Democratic House 2007.
Prediction: efforts by Conyers and others to investigate malfeasance by the criminal bush cabal related to the Iraq War and the bogus Perpetual Holy War On Terra and on other matters such as Election Fraud will be blocked and obstructed by a coalition of fascist enabler Democrats and Republicans.

Likewise for tax reform. Likewise for all other significant progressive legislative and investigative initiatives. Likewise for the Senate if it should go Democratic.

p.s. I will work for and vote for the Democratic Party candidates. I just have no illusions about how this is going to play out.

I have great respect for the man,, but he's surrounded by a Democratic Party that's just as corrupt as Republicans, the man can't do much by himself.

Let's hope voters vote and Diebold doesn't steal it again.

85. Thanks for reminding us that we have to look at the big picture.
I know the recent votes by some of our Democratic Senators and Congressmen have left a sour taste in our mouths, but we've got to get the majority first, then work on replacing conservative representatives with more progressive ones.

Conyers and the CBC were the only ones to stand up when the 2000 election was stolen.
If only the blind 17% knew half of what this man knows.
