9. support for a filibuster is the ONLY action that will count....
If the MCA goes to a vote it will pass on party lines. EVERY dem senator knows this. There is ONLY ONE WAY to block this monstrosity, and that is going to require more courage than an elequent floor statement and a "no" vote on the bill. Forty-one patriots must vote NO! on cloture.

as part of his negotiations.

My read is that Reid was pre-empting certain senators who he assumed WOULD filibuster against his wishes, yet again.

Sorry, but that is FOCKED!

34. You mean Harry Reid, the darling of the netroots
did this? He gave away habeas corpus and the rights of members of his own Dem Caucus to filibuster unilaterally because he didn't like it politically?

I'm shocked, just shocked to find politics is being played here.

46. I am one who gave lots of leeway to Reid as leader - but this is an act of
malice aforethought, imo.

The only reason he could possibly have to offer up filibuster is if he suspected a Kerry or Kennedy, Leahy or Feingold were preparing to filibuster and he didn't want it to happen.

There is just no other reason.

Amendments on the floor.

If he hadn't made that deal, there would be no filibuster because some Dems would cave and there would be NO CHANCE FOR DEMOCRATIC AMENDMENTS>

At least this way, Democrats stood up and forced debates on specific points and offered ALTERNATIVES.

58. What do you even know about the staffer?
The OP says nothing to make me think he/she did anything other than answer the phone politely. Now, if the staffer hung up on him, or asked "what torture bill, hold on I'll ask?", then the comment would be fair.

Remember the netroots whining that Kerry didn't know his place and needed to listen to Reid or the inside the beltway people complaining that Kerry was leading on things where "the party leaders" preferred someone else? The fact is Kerry has fought to lead. On this, Reid gave the game away. Kerry made a very strong appeal to conscience, reason and history. Would that some of the Republicans had a conscience.

The staffer's answer is good. I assume Kerry and many others are trying to persuade anyone they could to vote by what is right, not fear.

for what he said today.

They CANNOT filibuster this bill. That was part of the agreement that Harry Reid made to strip it out of the Secure Fencing Act and have it as a stand-alone bill.

Why don't you call Harry Reid's office and scream at him. He is the one who knifed his own caucus in the back.

Oh, but that's too easy. And it doesn't allow you to be made at Kerry, which is the whole point of your screed here.

Pathetic indeed.

From the DKos thread asking for a filibuster:

They apparently can't filibuster (0 / 0)
because of the deal worked out between the leadership before it came to the floor which prevents a cloture vote. I just called John Kerry's office to ask if there's any procedural way to block it at this point and his staff says no.

****************

That wasn't Kerry's doing. It was Reid's.

I live in a progressive town. Protesting here means NOTHING.

I have 3 children. I don't want them to become fatherless.

What resistance can we mount? I give money, I give time, I make phone calls, I email, I fax, what else can I do?

I don't want a clown show on the floor. I want a hero to stand up and scream "No you will not!"

I want Kerry to not allow a vote to take place and FORCE them to pull him off the floor shouting if that's what it takes to do his job to represent us. It's not clown activity! It's reasonable behavior considering what is happening.

Patriots gave their lives for less than this. I think a pol could brave a little humiliation if that's what it would take.

You and I know that any Dem that did it would be an instant hero.

37. He can't do anything!!!!!
How many ways does this need to be said for the truth to sink in.

The Democrats were betrayed by their leadership on this. The leadership made a deal with Frist that there would be no filibuster if the bill went to the floor, not as an amendment to the Secure Fencing Act, but as a separate, stand-alone bill. They also gave in on the request that there be only a few amendments allowed and that debate time be limited to two friggin days.

Kerry didn't do that, Reid did. How many times do we have to say this simple truth.

Oddly enough the appeal to reason and to conscience in his speech is far stronger than "embarrasing himself" What did you have in mind? I'm not even sure how a Senator COULD protest on the Senate floor. He is after all allowed to be there.

In 1971, he changed many minds in the country through an emotionally charged speech that he had the moral credentials to deliver. But, that was back when we had a free press and media. I assume that few people, no watching CSPAN, will see it. Instead, we'll see things like Paris Hilton arrested for DUI.

torture on a daily or near daily basis at least since Septemer 7 on Hardball. THe answer to the question at Peperdine was extremely emotional - maybe because of the ties to basic morality,

Reid was very very wrong on this. Far more Americans are as horrified as Kerry was. His words and body language told it all - he is completely horrified by this. (As were many others - I was coming and going and missed many - but Kennedy and Leahy were pretty angry and disgusted. We aren't alone.

I hope that when a new Congress comes in Kerry leads on effort to replace Reid with Durbin.
