Since no Dem amendment passed, couldn't Reid RESCIND no filibuster offer?
The GOPs aren't playing fair on the floor of the Senate and they keep changing their bills and language, so why should Reid feel obligated to stick to his original offer?

Maybe we should be centering our pressure on Reid - heck - maybe he'll lead one himself.

Anyone more versed in senate rules want to take a crack at that?

1. Offer schmoffer. He can filibuster any time he wants.
His word should be only as good as his colleagues across the aisle on this one!

2. I could have sworn that Reid said he changed his mind
But there is this thread where he is being barraged with calls:

Filibuster = failure to vote for cloture. They need 60 yes votes for that. It is required for this bill to move to final vote.

9. No cloture vote
"Filibuster = failure to vote for cloture. They need 60 yes votes for that. It is required for this bill to move to final vote."

Not when they already agreed by unanimous consent for a final vote. There will be NO cloture vote.

3. I don't understand why they allowed it to stand in the first place
It is a bi-partisan agreement which, as Gingrich said, is like date rape.

4. Ried's oath was taken
to the Constitution of the United States of America not the GOP. He doesn't need to keep his word to them and soon we shall see which he chooses.

10. I've been busy calling this morning.
Boxer
Feinstein
Joe Baca (my rep)
Reid
Pelosi
Kennedy
Kerry
Feingold
Byrd

All were very receptive and very polite.

My message was this:

It's time for somebody to stand up tall in the well of the Senate and remind the Senators that their first loyalty is to their oath of office to defend the Constitution. Habeas Corpus goes back to the Magna Carta and is clearly mentioned in the Constitution. The Geneva Conventions which were adopted by the Senate are the law of the land and must be honored in total. It's time to stop this run-away train. The United States must not become a torture nation. Filibuster if need be, but for the sake of all of us, put a stop to this.

11. Must Filibuster to show a spine
If the rethugs reneged on the deal, Reid absolutely must organize a filibuster or else he has no credibility, no pull, no power whatsoever to get even the smallest deal done. The rethugs would recognize this and just laugh at him any time he tried to "negotiate" anything.

I think Reid must realize that he has no choice but to filibuster or never be taken seriously by anyone in the Senate again. If he has any hopes of becoming a majority leader he must demonstrate some leadership. I think the rethuglicans proposed this deal to really box Reid in. He'll be exposed as impotent.
