OK, my understanding right now is that the main reason for the urgency in passing this torture bill is to retroactively protect bush and CIA from war crime prosecution now that the Supreme Court has found that they violated the Geneva Conventions. I hear pundits saying that the repubs want this through before recess because they may not have control of congress for much longer...
This makes it sound as ifonce this law passes, bush and everyone are in the clear...but what if the dems DO get congress? Won't they be able to overturn this bill with a new bill? Maybe one that will get enough votes to overturn a veto threat?
I know none of us want this to pass because we, as real Americans, do not want to turture. It is not in our values. But beyond that - from a political perspective, if this bill passes, it is not complete imunity for the bush regime is it? After all, many are pointing out that the bill may not pass Constitutional muster anyways.
Just looking for clarification on this for those who dont watch Senate and House proceeding on a regular basis.
