UPDATE

Thanks to all of you for your "get well" wishes, ecards, email, and message board posts. We're feeling much better thanks to Theraflu (Mike and Kathy) and baby vitamin C and Benadryl (Molly). We are traveling this weekend on a little unexpected non-business-related trip and I doubt we'll have any updates for you until we return next week.

As for media news: Mike was recently interviewed by salon.com for an article they're writing about Air America Radio past, present, and future. As is "Creative Loafing" here in Atlanta. We haven't been told the publication dates, but watch for them. Mike had some interesting observations.

We've recently heard drips and drabs of rather distrubing information about our former employer that - among other things - hint to another possible explanation for our shocking and sudden dismissal. We are hesitant to discuss the details until we can confirm them, and until all our financial interests with Air America are resolved. Unless we sell the story to E! "Behind the Scenes" first. If true, the intrigue and backstabbing and spying and double-dealing would make Caligula blush. You can't make this stuff up, Truthseekers.

As for those three radio opportunities we keep mentioning - I think we'll have final news from one of them early next week. The other remains unchanged. The "less likely" opportunity is more so as days go by, however, a fourth option might have popped up! Not trying to be coy, but this really is all we can say at the moment. Once we're free to speak, we'll certainly give you the whole story in as much detail as you can stand!

Finally, your email, calls, and petitions on our behalf are so appreciated. It certainly is a big boost to our morale and is noticed by potential radio outlets as well. Thank you thank you thank you so much, we'll be in touch.

Liberal Talk Radio - Let The Water Cooler Wars Begin

Rush Limbaugh has, at various times, claimed credit for the elections of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush - and given how narrow electoral margins have been recently, he may be right. But now, in a free-market fashion that even conservatives have to salute, the tide is turning.

The rollout of Air America Radio has raised the visibility of liberal talk radio in America, regardless of how that company's future plays out. The buzz in the industry now is that momentum and consumer curiosity have built to where the coming years will see a whole raft of new liberal talk shows appearing on the radio waves across America, and the existing successful liberal shows (Bernie Ward, Alan Colmes, Ed Schultz, Tony Trupiano, Peter Werbe, Randi Rhodes, Peter B. Collins, Guy James, Lynn Samuels, my show, etc.) are all continuing to grow.

The swing of the programming pendulum was inevitable and reasonable, particularly given that more than half the nation votes Democratic/Green and those "latte-drinking, Volvo-driving" folks represent a very desirable demographic for advertisers. Local stations all across the country are moving local liberal DJs and radio-savvy local talent into local talk formats. (For example, WDEV here in Vermont put Progressive talk host Anthony Pollina and Independent Congressman Bernie Sanders on the air filling the 1-2 PM ET slot Monday through Friday with great listener response and a huge boost in Arbitron ratings.)

So here are a few tips to the up-and-coming crop of liberal talkers (I've been contacted by dozens this past year) from somebody who's been doing it for a while.

Move Over, Right Wing Radio - the Liberals Are Coming

NEW YORK - A political explosion happened this weekend in New York, and it may be the big one that gives Karl Rove nightmares. It could mean the end of George W. Bush's seemingly unending ability to tell overt lies to the American people and not get called on them by the American media.

At a Saturday talk radio industry event put on by Talkers Magazine, Gabe Hobbs, Clear Channel Radio's vice president of News/Talk/Sports, announced that in the near future this corporate owner of over 1200 radio stations is considering programming some of their talk stations "in markets where there are already one or two stations doing conservative talk" with all-day back-to-back all-liberal talk show hosts.

Using the analogy of how music radio stations wouldn't run different categories of music on a single programming day, Hobbs said talk radio was similarly "all about format." This, he said, is why liberal talkers haven't succeeded when sandwiched between conservatives - radio stations shouldn't mix formats but instead should market to specific listener niches. Understanding this, it's clear that only all-liberal/all-day programming can fill the demand for liberal talk radio, Hobbs' comments suggested.

The timing of Clear Channel's bombshell is interesting. Why this particular week and month?

Back last year, I wrote an op-ed first published on Common Dreams suggesting that there was money to be made by programming talk radio for the unserved majority of American voters who cast ballots in 2000 for Al Gore and Ralph Nader ("Talking Back To Talk Radio"). It's the nature of the marketplace to abhor a vacuum, and the hunger for liberal programming - as evidenced by its explosion across the internet and its great success in the few markets where it can be found - can be a very profitable vacuum to fill.
