Personally, I think that should be our election theme.

The Constitution IS our national security.

No Unitary Executive
Checks and Balances
Habeas corpus

Republicans - Soft on Tyranny

1. Why should they run on a platform that is such a blatant lie?

The Patriot Act, the IWR, various appointments, the Torture Bill, NSA Wiretapping, etc. etc., on and on. The Democrats have either actively or passively enabled the ongoing destruction of our Constitution. Sure, there are a few who have stood steadfast in their defense of the Constitution and our country, but they are a handful. Most of the Dems in power now have happily jumped on board on destruction scheme or another, and probably more than one.

So how are we to run on a premise that is such a blatant lie. This would just be adding insult to injury.

2. Possibly a small group of them can split off as Constitutional Democrats

Like Conyers and Feingold and Kucinich and any others that have sincerely voted their conscience and tried to preserve the core principles of this country. Maybe that's how they can describe themselves when the Republicans try to paint them as "soft on terror."
I agree with you that there are some who do not deserve the title or to belong on such a platform.

Haven't most sucessful third parties started as offshoots or splinters from a major party? Maybe we can lay the groundwork this election to get the appeasers in line for the larger election in 2008.

The reality is this country is a two party nation. That's not going to change.

3. There is already a Constitution Party

and they're a bunch of right wing fundamentalist nut jobs. We certainly don't want to be confused with them.
