Michael Smerconish - "SOB Arabs"
He said "SOB Arabs" twice this morning. I caught some of his radio show this morning while driving to work. (Philly radio sucks. All Republican talk radio).

Smerconish was discussing the Jeannine Pirro husband scandal and her taped conversation with Bernard Kerik about planting a listening device on her husband's boat. Smerconish said he wished that Kerik was head of Homeland Security so that he could got those "SOB Arabs." He said this to a reporter who interviewed Pirro, then he said it to Sean Hannity who called Smerconish's show.

The best part was Hannity saying that Pirro stays with her cheating husband because she believes in family and wants her children to have a family that is together. Of course her children are about the same age as Chelsey Clinton in 1998 and Hannity ridiculed Hillary for staying with Bill in 1998.

1. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The 14 Characteristics of Fascism
by Lawrence Britt
Spring 2003
Free Inquiry magazine

Political scientist Dr. Lawrence Britt recently wrote an article about fascism ("Fascism Anyone?," Free Inquiry, Spring 2003, page 20). Studying the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile), Dr. Britt found they all had 14 elements in common. He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism. The excerpt is in accordance with the magazine's policy.

The 14 characteristics are:

Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottoes, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

Rampant Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.

Controlled Mass Media
Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

Obsession with National Security
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

Corporate Power is Protected
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

Labor Power is Suppressed
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed .

Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

Fraudulent Elections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

2. Bernie didn't try very hard when he was in Iraq.
Book Says Bernie Kerik Grandstanded then Left Iraq

Disgraced ex-Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik went to Iraq in 2003 to restore law and order, but instead signed autographs and gave press conferences as a celebrity 9/11 hero, former colleagues charge.

After arriving in Baghdad's protected Green Zone in May 2003, Kerik was supposed to take over the occupation's Interior Ministry and train hundreds of cops to stabilize the country.

Kerik later boasted that he reestablished the Iraqi police force - yet he only added 100 men to Baghdad's Finest, a new book says.

They were in a tiny paramilitary unit that nabbed a few kidnappers and car thieves in a city teeming with insurgents, Washington Post reporter Rajiv Chandrasekaran writes in "Imperial Life in the Emerald City."

Just 105 days after he arrived, Kerik abruptly left Baghdad on a CIA flight, sources told the Daily News. He landed in Amman, Jordan, before jetting to Europe - where he went to "decompress," Kerik later said.

3. He's Been Getting His Appologist Wings Lately
I saw that humanoid shit on Tweety the other night. I'm sure he's still shilling for Tweety's brother.

He was trying to split hairs on what is and isn't torture...and how "security" comes first. This guy didn't sound strong...he sounded like the scared little shit he is...that the evil A-rabs were coming to get him. The dude needs to get a grip...he's not that important...the A-rabs have other concerns.

Philly would be a great home for a Progressive talker...just there aren't many available signals...and they're locked away by Infinity & Cheap Channel.

Regarding Pirro...I'm surprised no one showed her stunning press appearance last spring when she lost Page 10.

Yep, the hypocrisy is amazing...especially since she got caught talking to Kerik who was already under Federal Investigation. Michael Isakoff couldn't have arranged a better set up.

If it wasn't for Kate Harris and her traveling circus, the Pirros could be interesting to watch.

4. Philly would be a good place for a libtalk radio station
Notice that WHAT-AM (former AAR affiliate) dropped off the (overall) ratings chart since they dropped AAR?

If done properly, and on at least a semi-decent signal, the format could work there.

6. I'm In Chicago...We're Not Much Better
Unfortunately radio and AAR are in a real sad state and we're starting to see all the fine benefits of what happens when you downsize and outsource your radio stations and cheapen the product into oblivion.

There are a lot of opportunities to create more Progressive radio voices out there, just like the right wing and christian media have set up theirs. The challenge has been to put egos and other agendas aside and work together...and unfortunately that's been a real plague on Progressive radio. Here's hoping that changes and more voices reach more ears.

Cheers...
