My daughter finally found a job...at Walmart
She was laid off for lack of work a few months ago and after much searching, she knew with the holidays coming she was getting desperate. She applied at two places on Monday. One was McDonald's and the other Walmart.

Walmart hired her today as a cashier. She's relieved, but I told her they will be building another Walmart here. That's three Walmarts in Kingsport, TN. She laughed a little and said before you know it the only jobs available will be at Walmart.

I couldn't tell her she shouldn't work there. She has kids to care for and she needs a job.

1. Well at least Wall Mart will tell her how to apply to get the state to
provide her children's health care.

2. Sad. You can still decide to not shop there.
I too have just heard a friend's brother (with a family and unemplyed for some time) got a job there. It breaks my heart. Do you have Cosco there - Trader Joe's? We are fortunate here in LA, CA that we don't have Walmart and successfully protested to get it out of our city.

4. No...
There was a rumor we might get a Cosco, but I don't believe it. This is the south and people love their Walmarts here.

I shop at Walmart only when I absolutely have to and that's getting rarer these days.

3. That's what it's coming to.
I am 27, working and paying taxes for 12 years, have a masters degree, and feel LUCKY, after over a YEAR of looking, to have gotten two, part-time state agency jobs (with the SAME agency, but 20 hours each!!!) with NO BENEFITS.

Welcome to Bushmerica. I feel SO thankful I do not have children to feed. I would have to strip or sell drugs. Literally.

5. If she takes good notes, collects documentation ...
... and gets good evidence to show violations of labor laws and other frauds, it might be worth it.

6. Working at a Wal-Mart is not a bad thing, shopping at one is.
If I worked at a Wal-Mart I would do the bare minimum to keep the job. No outstanding performance, no nothing.

8. I'm not politically correct
so I shop at Wal-Mart from time to time and when I go I see a funny thing. I can't explain it. I have been living here in Silver City, New Mexico (note to everyone, if you lived in Silver City, you'd buy stuff from time to time at Wal-Mart too) for about 3 years and I almost NEVER see the same checkers there; we are talking about a 3 year period. Something is going on there. It's just plain weird.

14. No offense taken, mi amigo
Not too far. They have a sort of fair there, folks dress up like Aliens and march down the street and it looks like tons of fun.

9. You guys make getting a job at Wal-Mart
seem like being a concentration camp prisoner.

Imagine that, they actually pay you, {normally at prevailing local wages}, offer you benefits, {yes, you have to wait longer than most companies}, give quarterly raises, give you a 10% discount as an employee.

Is it the greatest job in the world, most likely not, but it's a job and better than what many other small locally owned employer's pay.

This Wally world bashing has reached ridiculous levels.

10. She'll be making less money than at her last job...
the benefits will be a plus, though. She really didn't want to work there mainly because of the odd hours, but she got to the point she had to capitulate in order to make a living.

13. Locally owned employers?
Where do you live? Since Malwort came to our area, two of our local grocery stores have closed. We have to travel 8 miles to get to a grocery store other than Malwort, because we refuse to shop there. Have you seen "The high cost of low prices"? You may feel differently about "Wallyworld", if you watch it.

15. Every employer in your area is a chain store???
I would bet money the Walmart employs more people then the two grocery stores that closed.

Walmart is a fact of life.

As with everything, there are positives and negatives. I believe in the long run where they build Walmarts, it a positive thing for the overall community. {that's a qualifier!}

I have seen "The high cost of low prices" Propaganda should be taken as such.

12. Wal-Mart gets a bad rap IMO
I shop there myself because I save money. Wal-Mart has just reduced the waiting time for health benefits for part-time employees from 2 years to 1 year. They have introduced a pilot program for generic drugs at only $4 to everybody who has no insurance, and they expect to expand it to cover all their stores next year.

They are opening up health care clinics inside their stores too. They offer job opportunities to people living in economically depressed areas who otherwise would not have jobs. It is mainly the union organizers who oppose Wal-Mart and bad mouth them, but I think they are doing better for their people than most corporations do.
