(snip)

State of Denial paints a picture of a President convinced of his rightness, and of a White House and Pentagon unconcerned with coherent planning for the post-invasion phase. It also provides a tantalising glimpse of father-and-son differences over the war.

Mr Woodward writes that Barbara Bush confided to a friend that her husband George HW Bush, the 41st President was deeply concerned by the war. "He is certainly worried, and he's losing sleep over it. He's up at night worried," Barbara is quoted as saying.

4. Oh, really? He doesn't sound too worried in this anecdote.
DON'T blame George H.W. Bush for the sins of his son, President George W. Bush. Rapper Fab Five Freddy went to New Orleans to catch the Saints play the Atlanta Falcons at the Superdome with his pals, ex-Viacom CEO Tom Freston, Viacom's John Sykes and MTV head Judy McGrath. "We were out on the field to watch U2 and Green Day and George Bush Sr. walked by," Freddy told us. "I got in his way and (yelled), 'We need to bring the troops home!' He told me, 'We must win this war.'So I said again, 'Bring the troops home' - and even though people tried to herd him away, he came back and said, 'I don't really have anything to do with it.' "

9. While I don't have much respect for 41, I can say he at least had
a more pragmatic and moderate approach. He wasn't above using power to enhance his polical/financial objectives...but he sort of knew the boundries. His son has a personality defect that makes it impossible to admit failure...something he's quite adept at. 43's psychological problems makes him perfectly capable to destroy the very system that made his selection possible. He's the Decider, afterall.

6. Poppy's losing sleep over his son's drift into territory that he can't
fix. I doubt he's lost a lot of sleep over the overall policy. I think Poppy's primary benefactors in the House of Saud are reasonably happy. Radical fundies are focused on killing Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan, Saudi Oil is getting premium values because Iraqi Oil is off the market. And we may be taking on Iran, the Saudi's #1 political/social/religious rival in the ME. what will that do the market prices?
