Cradle of Violence: How Boston's Waterfront Mobs Ignited the American Revolution
Russell Bourne

Russell Bourne argues that Boston's waterfront gangs were responsible for starting the tradition of anti-British resistance that eventually led to the American Revolution. The author details the Stamp Act riots of 1765 and the Boston Tea Party of 1773 and explains that the gangs' violent protests included tarring and feathering customs officials, burning a Lt. Governor's mansion, and fighting British soldiers in the streets. Mr. Bourne discusses his book at the Old South Meeting House in Boston, Massachusetts.

Russell Bourne has worked at Life magazine and as an editor at the Smithsonian and American Heritage Books. He is the author of "Americans on the Move: A History of Waterways, Railways and Highways," "Red King's Rebellion: Racial Politics in New England 1675-1679," "Rivers of America: Birthplaces of Culture, Commerce and Community" and "Gods of War, Gods of Peace: How the Meeting of Native and Colonial Religions Shaped Early America."

On Saturday, September 30 at 6:00 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Fire of His Genius: Robert Fulton and the American Dream
Kirkpatrick Sale

In "The Fire of His Genius," historian Kirkpatrick Sale depicts the early days of inventor Robert Fulton's life and his numerous inventions. Some of his patents include an inclined plane, a rope-maker, a submarine, an underwater cannon, and a steam frigate. Mr. Sale points out that while Robert Fulton did not invent the steamboat, his knowledge of machinery and an ability to incorporate the inventions of others into his own work led to the development of the first truly workable steamship. The author explains that Robert Fulton's North River steamboat, that made a successful four-day round-trip to Albany, ushered in the Industrial Revolution and transformed nineteenth-century America.

Kirkpatrick Sale is a contributing editor of The Nation and the author of several books, including "Conquest of Paradise: Christopher Columbus and the Columbian Conquest," "Dwellers in the Land: The Bioregional Vision," "The Green Revolution: The American Environmental Movement 1962-1992," "After Eden: The Evolution of Human Domination" and "Rebels Against the Future: The Luddites and Their War on the Industrial Revolution."

On Sunday, October 1 at 5:45 am and at 4:00 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Camp Democracy Panel on War and the Media
Jeff Cohen, Ray McGovern, Robert Taicher, Jeff Norman

Jeff Cohen and Ray McGovern talk about the corporate media's coverage of the Bush administration during the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq. They argue that the corporate media failed in its responsibility to ask tough questions and instead decided to largely act as cheerleaders for going to war. Jeff Cohen addresses this issue through his experience producing MSNBC's Phil Donahue's Show during this period and talks about why the show was cancelled just prior to the invasion. Ray McGovern, who worked as a CIA analyst for 27 years, discusses what the intelligence community was saying about Iraq prior to the war and talks about a confrontation he had with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld during an event in Atlanta this past May. After their presentations, writer/director Robert Taicher makes remarks about his new documentary "Rush to War" (www.rushtowar.com). The discussion is moderated by Take On the Media founder Jeff Norman (www.takeonthemedia.org).

Jeff Cohen founded the media watchdog group Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting in 1986. His latest book is "Cable News Confidential" (www.jeffcohen.org). Ray McGovern is co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) and is currently co-director of the Servant Leadership School in Washington, DC. This panel was one of the events that took place at Camp Democracy, a two week long anti-war protest and teach-in held on the National Mall in Washington, DC between September 5th and September 21st. 25. Well, the children must be fed somehow.
And these are, after all, hard times.

The hug diminishes my shame somewhat, but I still can't shake that strict Christian upbringing.

I take comfort in knowing that Jesus had great mercy for my kind.

The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy: An Economist Examines the Markets, Power, and Politics of World Trade
Pietra Rivoli

Pietra Rivoli talks about her book, which explains globalization through the story of a t-shirt's lifespan - from harvesting the cotton in Texas through that shirt's manufacture in China to its eventual sale as a new product in the U.S. and as used clothing in Africa. In the course of her talk she discusses trade policies, economics, and politics in the U.S., China and Africa. During the discussion, the author shows slides of her travels and later answers questions from the audience. Bentley College in Boston, Massachusetts, hosted this event.

Since 1983, Pietra Rivoli has served on the faculty of Georgetown University's School of Business. Her work has appeared in the Journal of International of Business, Journal of Business Ethics, and Business Ethics Quarterly.

Since 1996, Mr. Alter has also been a contributing correspondent for NBC News where he appears regularly. In 1997, Mr. Alter was a visiting professor at Princeton University and taught journalism and politics. He has also been a freelance writer for The New Republic, Esquire, and the New York Times. (You can ask Agent Mike.)I stayed here and suffered along with my fellow and female Americans.

Just really pissed-off and freaked out last night.

And I was supposed to be painting the new bathroom walls today.

Go make me a bundle, mama!:loveya:

I will call them and reprimand them for the disruption.

Andrew Carroll up now. "Operation Homecoming", something about letters from troops and preserving them. ( I just awoke, and I'm groggy from the heavy atmosphere of this suddenly brave new world.)
