UPDATE: (Larisa's Cousin)Jailed Under New Government Program
'Operation Return to Sender' stumbles

Jennifer Van Bergen
Published: Thursday September 28, 2006

Questions are being raised about the arrest, detention, and treatment of a long-term Ukrainian legal resident alien in Florida.

Bella Maryanovsky, a thirty-year legal resident of the United States, was arrested last week on Tuesday, September 19, when she entered immigration offices for a routine update of her green card papers. It appears she was arrested under a new immigration program called “Operation Return to Sender.”

According to Michael Chertoff in a June 2006 press release, “Operation Return to Sender is another example of a new and tough interior enforcement strategy that seeks to catch and deport criminal aliens, increase worksite enforcement, and crack down hard on the criminal infrastructure that perpetuates illegal immigration.”

“The fugitives captured in this operation,” claimed Chertoff, “threatened public safety in hundreds of neighborhoods and communities around the country. This department has no tolerance for their criminal behavior.”

11. A local St Louisan, well known for his pro pot
politics, was facing deportation to the Ukraine on account of a 20 year old pot arrest. He and his family immigrated to the US approx 30 years ago as Jewish refugees from Russia. He has not been in the Ukraine since he was a small child. He has also not taken up US citizenship.

3. Larisa, if you read this...
Edited on Sat Sep-30-06 12:37 AM by catabryna
will you please contact me privately? I'd like to post a link (or something) about this to our Ukrainian adoption list, but don't want to do so without your permission. We have over 1,000 families in our "little" group from all over the country and the travesty that your cousin is experiencing scares the hell out of me; especially considering that my son is a dual citizen and there's no end to this (gawd, I don't even know how to explain it, it's so bad) in sight. I'm now actually afraid for the day he turns 18 years old!

Edited to add: Thanks kpete.

8. "Return to Sender"?!
Like she's some kind of package lost in the mail! :puke:

My gods, just when I think I can't be more disgusted by the utter lack of value placed on human life by these fascist bastards, I surprise myself.

10. I have a friend from Ukraine, who committed a felony.
He served over a year in jail. The government tried to deport him, but Ukraine wouldn't take him because they said he is no longer a citizen. He is still here in the U.S.

12. The missing word here is MURDER
Bella was on blood pressure medication and is being denied her medicine and mocked for requesting it. According to a visitor she is already displaying symptoms of extreme hypertension. I know from personal experience that when you are on BP or cholesterol control medicine and suddenly stop it, your vital signs can bounce to truly horrific levels and you can indeed become a candidate for bypass surgery within weeks (this nearly killed my mother in law). Let us be clear that this is not "crime control" in any sense, this is sadism and attempted murder. To call it anything less is to whitewash the situation.

16. Michael Chertoff, this Song is For You
fine disservice
deceptive, too.

Check for the sender!
sender was you.

caught me wide open
no simple burn.

this is complicated
call for return!

A Fine disservice.
intended too

Check for the sender!
sender was you!

--CHOR.--

The point has been recorded!
The malice has been revealed

when I stripped away the humor
from the arrow that it concealed

sharpened soaked in urine it was
meant to
spread disease

but now discovered, becomes
the sweet antithesis!

Returning the screw
Returning the screw
Returning the screw
Returning the screw

it comes back to you!

Fugazi, "Returning the Screw"

20. I fear that her detention has more to do with
her cousin's high profile than with any "glitch" or "oversight" in her case. The fact that it is indefensible is the reason they can't get anyone to move on it. This is deplorable.
