than a field trip to a Congresscritter to receive a flag and get a picture of the kiddies next to a soon-to-be-accused molester.
Similar shots can be found across the political spectrum, with Congresscritters promoting or acknowledging a host of activities by various religious bodies. I don't see where this church has even asked for anything other than what any citizen can request from their representative: a few minutes of their time and a flag that flew above the Capitol.
Here's some pictures of my Senator, Barbara Boxer, engaged in similar activities (and possibly more, as I couldn't see if any favors or money were requested in any of the official writeups). Are we to condemn a leading liberal for meeting with her constituents?
Meeting with representatives from the California Interfaith Power and Light to discuss this faith-based community's efforts to provide inexpensive power to poor people and to reduce global warming.
Meeting with the Catholic Church-based Mercy Housing to discuss its latest projects (2005).
Finally, a still from a promotional video Sen. Boxer did in her official capacity for one of the Catholic Church's parishes in San Diego, Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala. The mission is a national monument, registered with the government as a historical site and supported with government funds, but it is owned and operated by the Catholic Church.
My point: There's plenty of good reasons to get incensed at the illegal and intrusive involvement many churches engage in these days with our government. But we need to pick our fights, and getting apoplectic over a church outing to see the Capitol, visit with a representative, collect a flag and pay respects at Arlington is hardly an auspicious jumping off place.
