Hey! Look over there!! Foley is distraction from the torture bill, people

Another "family values" Republican implodes over sexcapades. This is not news, this is the way of the Republicans. The leadership knew it for a year. They saved it up for a moment like this, so people can get distracted from the worst Constitution-shredding Imperial Inquisition law ever to come out of the Congress.

People should be in the streets shouting "Not in Our Name" and instead they're wasting their energy in giggling schadenfreude mock fury over another Republican pervert.

No wonder we can't impeach this sociopathic bastard.

2. but Torture and Pederasty go hand in hand
or is that hand to something else....

These republicans are so self-repressed they just might erupt.

3. If they were "saving it up" wouldn't they have had Foley not run
in order "to pursue other interests" instead of sacrificing a seat in Congress? Just askin'.

Exactly, this is unscripted on their part... The torture Bill was created
by Rove to make the Dems seem weak on torture.

I think this was one of the reasons they caved

4. I Don't Think So. I Think They hoped To Cover It Up Another 7 Weeks
I don't think they held this pervert as a trump-card for Constitutional crisis, I think they were hiding him until after the election and then they'd see what would happen.

Why do I say this?

It is a lot more like these criminals to cover up than it is to plan.

5. I really dont think this is a distraction....
This is going to blow up and make the repukes lose at least one seat possibly more. Sex scandals are red meat for the media and are going to harped upon for weeks. The torture bill was passing no matter what and the dems are scared to make an issue of it.

I think this is worse for them, as far as keeping the house is concerned.

10. I agree, apparently, the Torture Bill was too abstract for our...
hollow headed media to get their teeth into.

DU and DUers have done everything in their collective powers to upturn the grotesque
abomination of a bill passing through the Legislature and I am confident they will
continue with the effort.

But, we can strike the *spits* Reps with more than one iron... And this type of thing
has much traction in what currently passes for news in this nation.

7. I'm glad it's a distraction. I agree with whomever said that
the torture bill was pure politics, a craven attempt by BushCo to force the Dems to vote no so the Repubs could go on the election trail and paint them as "weak on terra". They just lost the only thing they've got, the "we keep you safer" meme. Oops!

9. It's hard for me to see how Bush was trying to distract people by
making public speeches and appearing with Matt Lauer in order to raise the debate and the sense of urgency, and then personally getting involved by going with Cheney to the Hill and twisting arms all day in the Senate to make sure they got the bill they wanted. That was a very public fight with the President leading the way, and it got major coverage in the news media.

This is a wedge issue that the Republicans are going to bash Dems with from now until election day. They have no intention of keeping it a secret. The message is "Democrats are soft on Terrorism."

If anything, Foley is taking the Repubs off message.

11. more like the story exploded right before the end of this session - Pelosi
pushed for an investigation and got the votes right before the end of this session. Last song we're hearing, leading into the weekend, on the lips of all the talking heads. And this story is a lead-in to the torture issue - the GOP shields sexual predators, what the heck, why be surprised that they support, promote, commit and DEFEND torture?

The timing of the Foley story hitting the fan seems perfect for our side, for the country.

12. Do you talk about what you read on DU with others? Co-workers, friends,
family?

An awful lot of this stuff slips under most people's radar.

I can bring up stuff like Foley's resignation in disgrace, then talk to people about how the Republicans don't just seem okay with pedophilia, they sleep blissfully at night knowing that this great country tortures people.

It's amazing to see their reactions when they haven't heard it on the news, and thanks to LBN and Newsmap, I can point them right to the stories.
