Gonzales cautions judges against second-guessing the president in wartime
WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who is defending President Bush's anti-terrorism tactics in multiple court battles, said Friday that federal judges should not substitute their personal views for the president's judgments in wartime.

He said the Constitution makes the president commander in chief and the Supreme Court has long recognized the president's pre-eminent role in foreign affairs. "The Constitution, by contrast, provides the courts with relatively few tools to superintend military and foreign policy decisions, especially during wartime," the attorney general told a conference on the judiciary at Georgetown University Law Center.

1. Gonzales would also strip the Courts of those "relatively few
tools" they do have -- like habeas corpus, judicial review, and the whole principle underlying Marbury v. Madison.

3. Just invade a nation, (any nation will do), declare it a "war", and then
be The Decider, above all laws, above the Supreme Court.

WOW.

Great idea!

Why didn't Dem presidents ever think of that! I'm sure they will for future!

THANK YOU, bUSH!!!

6. So, he's telling them not to do what they are appointed to do...
...that they are out of the loop.

The Torture Czar needs to brush up on the U. S. Constitution, particularly the part that deals with separation of powers.

Worst Attorney General ever!

We are not at war - bush and this admin are at war - I do not own this war - I did not vote for these people - I do not support torture of any kind -

8. Sounds like a Tom Delay type threat.
Trying to intimidate, or terrorize, the highest court in the land? Maybe he'll torture them if they step out of line?

10. No wonder they refuse to leave
Iraq. If we are no longer at "war", chimpy loses all that power as a "wartime" pResident. Mustn't have that now.

12. I would suggest to Gonzales that IF this were a legal war that
might make sense BUT this war has been illegal from the first. That makes it the courts business.
