Poll question: Does Religion and its view on sex create pedophiles?
By this, I mean do people who are overly entrenched in orangized religion, whatever it may be, have more of a proclivity to be sexually sick?

1. When normal human sexual urges are repressed,
they usually pop up somewhere else, but in a deviant way.

2. I think that religious views...
that demonize sex only serve to aggravate, rather than create, a pre-disposition that may already be there.

3. it is a sin, evil, bad..... i think this creates the battle within
i am a firm believer. i see life a little different than most, but this is a clear path to trouble in the way i see this issue and yes...

it is like from the time a kid can talk the first things they are taught in the christian churches in this area is "we are all sinners" they says htis for decades in their life. my belief is if you say you are sinner enough you have to become in order to fulfill the self talk. i cna go further in this,.... but this is just a small example of what i talk.

then they have years to fulfill the quote and feel guilt over.....

4. Maybe I should have made this an option too.
Do these types of people find a "safe house" in religion.

Basically as a front for their perversion. No one would ever think they would do that, they belong to the church,....etc.

11. that's a better question, but let's expand it: pedophiles are attracted
to any and all positions which offer them opportunities to be alone and in a position of authority with young people....track coaches, priests, halfway house monitors, social workers, carnival workers, day care workers, clowns for hire, you name it.

Now, the mature thing is to realize that being a clown for hire does not make you a pedophile, but that pedophiles would try to get the position.

5. See the Pedophiles in the Catholic church that forbids Marriage of Priests
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2855921

The theory is they use this to blackmail important people like legislators and other prominet leaders to go thier way in voting controling the military etc etc.
It is the repugPEDOPHILElican way

Got Fascism Yet?

19. That's Such a Bullsh*it Agenda
Some married men have been known to be pedophiles.

Some gay men have been known to be pedophiles.

Many pedophiles abuse girls and boys both.

Some priests don't abuse anyone.

However, to take the issue of clergy abuse and use it to promote an agenda - in this case, allowing priests to marry - is exploitative of the pain and suffering of abuse victims.

It's entirely unnecessary - there are valid medical reasons why abstinenceeee is not a good thing. Why don't you try those ones, instead, and give those of us who have first-hand knowledge of clergy abuse a break?

6. I am anti-religion, but NO
I think it's a chemical/brain thing.

And they cannot be rehabilitated. Religion might make them more likely to act on their desires, though, by indirectly justifying it or creating the right environment in terms of availability of naive children, etc. Just like I think having been abused in childhoo sometimes makes one more likely to do that. I think that holds true more for men than women, though. About half the women I've known in my life have experienced sexual abuse (beyond verbal and general environmental sexual harassment, which all women experience), but none of them are sexual predators. But I think young boys who witness sexual abuse are more likely to become abusers in the future, while simultaneously feeling deep guilt.

These are just my own observations from personal experience.

I think all pedophiles should be quarantined together where they can live apart from society and from children and they can, like, make quilts.

14. I suspect it's an evolutionary thing
that now serves no purpose and has come to be seen as morally objectionable

(which I think it is! but I think it's also a compulsion on their part, like gay or straight attraction for the rest of us - chemistry)

7. Sure, lets blame religion. It beats accepting the reality that
pedophilia cuts across all demographic groups. But sure, hey, let's castigate religion for no reason other than to lump all the thing we hate in one place.

10. i agree. but being a christian myself, i dont think it is beating up on
to look at behaviors and see what is created from them. otherwise how does one grow and learn and evolve. doesnt have to be a bad thing. i dont look at it as something to hurt or battle another with. i look at it more to see what is created andhow to help a person.

eye of the beholder. intent

8. I think it's the other way around.
I think people who are uncomfortable with their sexuality are drawn to religion as a way of feeling "moral" in spite of their "nasty thoughts." They are drawn to Republicanism for the same reason.

16. What, do tell, is "Religion and its view on sex"? What the fuck does
"overly entrenched in orangized religion" mean?

If you can't formulate a legitimate question or make an intelligent comment without being that offensive and ultimately prejudicial... perhaps you shouldn't post on that particular topic.

Please rethink your position and rephrase your question. As it stands now, it's VERY INSULTING.

20. Other!
I don't think religion creates them, but some kinds of authoritative religion--where children and women are taught to obey men unquestioningly, and sex is something shameful to be kept secret and never talked about, create an environment that's a sexual predator's dream. He can expect to enjoy his "possessions" in privacy and transfer the shame onto them.

21. If you mean the Christian religion...
...then yes.The only two women of value are a reformed women (Mary Magdeline)who is touted for changing from (having normal sex)in her past life of sin to worshipping Jesus, whom by christian doctrine dies with no reference to ever having experienced any carnal relationships, and Mary-another virgin (and therefore sexually unapproachable) who gives birth to the worshipped virgin....And therefore, worthwhile females become totally taboo and the object of worship are virginal males who in most societies are very young...

22. What Creates Pedophiles is Emotional Fucktardism
On the part of pedophiles *and* a society that refuses to acknowledge childhood sexuality and cope with it in healthy ways.

What creates pedophile victims - the easy ones, anyway - are parents/families who are neglectful of a child's supervision + emotional needs.

And once you add incest into the mix, well that's just all sorts of emotional fucktardism, isn't it?

Religious views on sexuality are almost as diverse as all of humanity's views on the subject.

25. Absolutely, each of the Big Three are horribly repressive and, inevitably,
when such a basic need is repressed, it will express itself in bizarre and perverse ways.

Disclaimer: Faith has nothing to do with religion.

26. It's merely a symptom
Edited on Sat Sep-30-06 03:05 PM by TrogL
The problem with the religious right isn't necessarily religion, per se, it's the authoritarian mindset. They litearlly think they can do no wrong because they are blessed. They also seem to lack inhibitions most folk consider normal - eg. a conscience.

Such people are attracted to fundamentalist religion - and its 'faith rules all' mindset that seems to excuse them from "works" and morality.

29. The more religious you become, the more sick you can become, period.
The farther you fall into believing in magic and unproven things, the easier it is to be warped. See fundies for evidence of this premise.
