It reminds me of stories of post WWII, how the Germans and Japanese had no military recourse so they strengthened themselves economically.

Bin Laden may have crushed the USSR by similar means and the Neocons fell right into his trap by trashing our economy and all that was notorious and resounding and redemptive about american ideals.

Funny thing, the Islamic extremists were opposed to progressive changes the Soviet Union brought to Afghanistan before the invasion. Ever since he stole his way into office, many of us have thought that the Chimperor was just dying for an excuse to suspend habeas corpus. I remember having just such a discussion with someone from Salon's TableTalk the morning of VoterMarch, in May of 2001. Sept 11 was PERFECT for him.

The WTC attack is the perfect metaphor for what's happening to America. I remember watching the coverage on CNN of the two burning towers, thinking, "That's bad, but the buildings are strong. They're built to take plane hits. There'll be a lot of damage, but it'll be reparable. Then, after an hour, the first one slid into the ground, like an elevator to hell. Then the second one went. I couldn't understand how such large, well-built structures, made of steel and concrete, built on bedrock, could be so badly undermined by what appeared to be a survivable attack.

America is like those towers. 9/11 damaged it, but the damage appeared to be small relative to the size and strength of the country. After all, the loss of 3,000 lives and a few billion dollars of property pales when compared with the annual carnage on our roads or the effects of tobacco and alcohol. The attacks were horrible and shocking, but America was big enough to take it. Or so I thought.

Instead, we're witnessing a slow-motion collapse; five years of cracking and snapping in the support structures of our country. The edifice is still standing; the damage appears confined to a few of our country's upper floors, but appearances are deceiving. Like the WTC, the core of the country has been compromised, weakened. Everything that hangs from that core, all the pretty glass and shining chrome of our national identity, is poised to crash to earth.

I'm sure the Al Qaeda leadership never imagined in their wildest dreams that the 9/11 attacks would be as spectacularly successful as they were. Bringing down two iconic buildings in the financial capital of the most powerful country in the world, on global television, was beyond even their fondest imaginings. Imagine how delighted they must be now. Those attacks have potentially brought down the whole country.

The war on 'terror' has nothing to do with protecting America. It has everything to do with establishing world corporate-nation hegemony.

I am not confident that we are going to be able to defeat them without major structural changes to the economic system of this country. Since the RayGun administration, we've been innundated with the most effective propaganda ever devised by man. The Soviet Union has NOTHING on Corporate Capitalism. We've been sold on the idea of heroic CEOs, that privatization is the answer for everything, that we should feel as though every aspect of our lives is a competition. We've adopted that idea that cooperative societies are bad (even though h.Sapiens would have never survived without basic cooperative instincts and skills), and that work is the key to happiness. What is considered normal is broadcast to the American public by way of movies, tv and advertising.

So long has we are not collectively able to see through the cloud of bullshit, we will happily continue down the road to corporate totalitarianism.
