Are any Dems and/or DU'ers still boycotting ABC...?
Just sincerely wondered, after seeing a few posts citing them as a source.

1. I'm boycotting.
I won't watch any ABC/Disney owned television stations. I will not attend, purchase or rent any movies made by Disney or any affiliate. I will not purchase any Disney merchandise.

I have been clicking on iternet links to important news items on ABC. If you want to judge me to be violating the spirit of the boycott by clicking on links, you're free to.

judge you?

My question isn't about a judgement one way or the other. I merely asked a question because I was curious. How does that equate to a judgement?

Thanks for answering, btw. :)

:hi: I understand. I'm sometimes surprised by the tone of some posts on our boards. I've also fallen for posting to some threads where someone said they were "curious" or just seeking opinions only to find someone had an agenda, just wanted to argue or make fun of posters. :eyes: So, I can see how you might think that.

I appreciate the apology.

On edit.

Hmmmm....maybe I should have made this a poll. Just to get a sense of where people are in regard to ABC.

I know sometimes people start things, but in time they change their minds or their positions soften for one reason or the other. It happens, no harm---no foul. ;)

6. I wonder if they created many new shows this year...
seems like they've put all their eggs in the basket of Lost, Desperate Housewives, Dancing w/the Stars and that medical show (the name escapes me, since I wasn't a regular viewer of the show before the boycott).

We wrote the company a letter letting them know what we were doing and why. We even cancelled the vacation we were planning this fall to WDW. Didn't want our funds reimbursing those jerks for their crappy re-write of 9/11.

:hi: Thanks for responding!

4. I am not boycotting
never claimed I would or sent messages to ABC. Always felt their goofy movie would pass in the news cycles rather quickly and be much ado about nothing. With that said, their programing for this fall, is in my opinion so very, very poor and uninteresting that I am not watching any of it. I am to the point where I find so little of interest on TV, combined with 20 minutes of commercials per hour of programing that I watch less and less. Just to make it through a news program, I have to see countless ads for drugs with tons of side effects and refinancing that I loss interest in waiting for what's next.

and of course you are entitled to your stance. Thanks so much for responding! :hi:

I agree that there is little in the way of interesting or innovative television programming these days. It's really sad. It does seem there aren't quite as many "reality shows" on the major networks--I'm hoping maybe that trend is dying down, but it's probably too soon to tell.

12. I am not boycotting either
I also figured that the movie would be quickly forgotten and that its absurd view of history would probably be its own undoing. I'm just not a fan of boycotts of actors or entertainment, though I rarely watch television anymore.

"Lost" is about the only ABC program that I have had any interest in, and, recently, it's begun to reek.

that Lost is waning, I mean. Kinda' sucks when the only thing you look forward to seeing jumps on the crap wagon.

On the boycott and your choice not to--so NOT a big deal. I appreciate your sharing your perspective on it, though! :)

If you don't really watch much tv--they aren't going to miss what they don't have. :P Also, many have made the point of Nielsen families being the only ones counted, though that argument was countered by those that stated their cable carriers do rating reporting.

One of the great things (I think) about being a progressive is that we aren't bound to following one course of action. Conformity seems to be an ideal of the other side of the aisle. ;) If some DU'ers aren't jumping on the boycott bandwagon--that's progressive and ok. lol.

I can't recall the last time I tuned in to ABC for anything, so me boycotting it is like me boycotting skydiving ... I would have a problem boycotting NBC (Law and Order, all 15 of 'em) or even Fox (Family Guy and American Dad) but I can't stop watching what I'm already not watching!

I'm not anymore, after their Paths to 9/11 stunt. So feel free to share why you aren't a fan, if you'd like. ;)

My support of Disney was diminishing--it seems the longer I was a fan, the more I saw about the company that bothered me. I was ambivalent about them for some time prior to Paths to 9/11. I tried to allow them some latitude, as they seemed to be a progressive company in some regards (i.e. employment practices, gay days in the parks, etc.) but some of their actions have bugged me for a while... I just tried to ignore some stuff, and probably shouldn't have.

Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 04:43 AM by REP
Disney cartoons seem to be nothing more than ways to move merchandise. Even the old cartoons - which do have some nice animation - have insipid drawings and uninteresting stories. They're just too bland, boring, safe and conventional for me, and represent the worst of American values (colorful, loud, plastic, prefabricated, unthreatening, predigested).

On edit: Add to that everything Carl Hiaasen has written about the Giant Rat, and that's why I've been anti-Disney for a long time - but hating their bland output came first.

49. I do hope that you can forgive
my ignorance, but I'm not familiar with Carl Hiassen's work. He wrote about Disney?

I read the books by David Koenig, which gave me a different view of all the things I'd been fed over the years about the Disney company, and merely took for granted as truth. It wasn't.

I agree about the commercial aspect of their animated features. The merchandising is nauseating and tiresome. I was excited by a few of their later features that seemed to sway from their 'formulaic' animation techniques. But was disappointed when they returned to doing what they always did before. :boring: For example, the drawings used for Hercules, while not great they were different and that was interesting to me.

I got annoyed by the fact that everytime some group complained about an obscure aspect hidden in their features by the animators, they recalled the features (vhs tapes, dvd's) and removed the allegedly "offensive" feature.

sounds like a good one! I LOVE books that provide the truth on the dark underbelly of things most think are so wholesome and pure. :P

I've heard that about Walt, too. :( While reading the Koenig books, I learned of his employee assignments--racist and sexist. The only person of color allowed to work in his park were the women staffing the Aunt Jemima Pancake store. :puke: Unattractive employees worked food service. He didn't get why the NAACP found Song of the South offensive.

My husband and I got a kick out of counting the times park visitors summon the name of the late, great uncle Walt when we used to visit. It gets downright sickening hearing people speak of the man like they knew him personally. :eyes:

"How can you do this to Walt's legacy--he must be turning over in his grave! He'd never want to see this done to his company...his beloved park" The humanity...:eyes: As if!

32. Well I gotta admit.
Before the whole mockumentary thing hubby and I bought year passes. We live right by it and if you have passes it's a cheap way to go unwind. We have only been twice, and haven't since the stupid movie, but will likely go again. I can't say I won't be thinking about it a lot while I'm there, but the way things are going right now, you can't win 'em all. We have to have SOMETHING to look forward to. Plus, we dont' eat or shop there, and since we can't just get our money back, what's the point? So we'll still go sometimes.

As for TV we don't have it right now and thanks to most things on TV sucking, and have decided not to for at least probably a year. It's too expensive, too much bullshit (liberal media my ass), even though I LOVE my Jon and Stephen and KO. I do watch lots of clips on YouTube.

Don't beat yourself up about it too much--you already paid for your passes. You can't get a refund, and they already got your money. If you go and use your pass to get in free, just to walk around and get some fresh air, what's the harm? Just try to give them as little $$ as possible. ;)

When I'm not quite as pissed (if that day ever comes--it may not), I plan to go to the park with flyers. I will place those flyers on all the cars in the parking lot I can--telling people WHY they should also boycott Disney.

What better way to get out the word to those that could really affect the company's bottom line? ;) Some of those cars are bound to be owned by progressives...

:blush: you're welcome--and thank YOU! :pals::hug:

Have you ever hung out on any of the Disneyland fan boards? OMG--there's TOO Many rw-ers that are Disney fans. That really bugged me! They act like they are entitled to all things Disney--it's a bit scary. :scared:

60. No, I'm not that big of a fan to be honest.
A fan-board for that would be boring to me. I love the older movies, but I'm not like the people who spend $10 on a PIN and wear a neck-full of them all over the place. That's so wierd... what is that?? What a waste of cash. I don't understand Disneymania. It's all about rides and scenery for me (although it's sooo clean it kinda freaks me out). I suppose if another themepark were as close we'd just go there. But now I'm morbidly curious about the fan boards... crazy freeps. It freaks me out how they ignore things about Disney that sort of go against the morals they say they have. I can totally picture them thinking that Disney is a place for THEM.

I never went as a child but hubby did. He has very happy memories there so it means something more to him.

62. OMG--you just made me lmao...
Those damn pins...! :spray::rofl: I hate those. I hate how they've destroyed stores in the park that had a theme, personality and charm to create yet another place to sell those pins.

I really don't like to put others or their interests down at all, but I have yet to meet a pin person that wasn't a bit "odd." This is coming from someone that once worked at a place that had rabid pin collectors, my first introduction to them actually. They were downright rude to employees over their precious pins. Just a very strange phenomena to me--no disrespect to any DU'ers that participate in this activity. Not ALL doing this are weird--but the ones I've encounted...

If you lived in socal as a kid it's tough not to have at least a few fond memories about D-land, my dh and I do.

It was tough to cancel our vacation to WDW, but worth it for me. Every week since P to 9/11 I've learned yet another thing about the company pandering to the right that pisses me off.

68. The only store I like there
sells vintage jewelry. Soooooo pretty. Haven't bought anything there, but wow, if I had money to throw around... Every other store is exactly the same. The SAME things over and over. And those damn pins! My (future) children, if we ever take them there, will NOT be getting that cheap, overpriced crap. I hope by that time I'll have taught them better than that, anyway. Perhaps ours will be a Tivo household if we ever get cable again. I HATE ads that target kids!!!!! Hate, hate, hate.

Woo-hoo! Off topic.

85. I like that store, too...
don't know if you remember it, but my favorite store was in New Orleans Square. It used to sell candles, vintage mardi gras masks, vintage jewelry, other specialty New Orleans items. It had a lot of charm. A few years ago, they turned it into another pin store. :eyes:

I think a lot of parents have the best intentions to NOT get their kids that crap. It's not their fault--I believe they lace the merchandise with some device only children respond to...forcing them to cry, whine, throw fits or obsess about the items all day until the parents give in and get it. :P

35. I laughed when the Xians were boycotting Disney
over their "gay day" and, frankly, don't give a rat's ass. I got free tickets to the movies and went and saw Pirates 2 this last weekend. I think I liked the first one better.

I don't have any bones with Disney. Never have. I've got friends who've been boycotting them forever and I STILL don't understand why.

And there's nothing on ABC I watch.

Like I said when the Xians did it. I'm sure they're crying all the way to the bank.

"Boo-hoo. Someone's boycotting us."

63. No, I'm not a Nielsen household, so it's stupid to boycott.
I'll be watching my Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal, Grey's Anatomy. Just like I only buy Apple computers and will continue to only buy Apple computers. Disney puts out some good stuff, like Pirates of the Carribean. Boycott over a mockumentary vs. Johnny Depp? Johnny Depp wins every time.

I'd rather boycott worse things like Walmart, Exxon and factory farming.

:hi: Are you refering to ABC news? That would explain why there are links posted on DU to their site, if they are providing the most comprehensive coverage...

I apologize for not being more aware, regarding this issue. I've bookmarked a few threads on the issue to read when I can catch up on my reading on DU.

Has ABC been more diligent on Foleythan others? Again, really behind in my reading and haven't really compared in terms of who's doing the best coverage.

While I would personally continue to boycott, I'm never going to begrudge journalists doing their job. I miss them doing so, and appreciate it when they do. :)

I did not feel it would work (it didn't stop the show), now no real goal on when it would end (sort of like Iraq).

Give up ESPN? no way.

2 young kids that love their disney movies and going once a year...I'd be punishing them more than the corporation that won't even notice in the first place.

Personally, I made fun of the Southern Baptist boycott of Disney for years, no way will I be a hypocrite and do the same useless thing.

110. Boycott still active. Path to 9/11 must be retracted. It's bigger than
the House Republican's child molestation camp and recruiting station cover up. Granted, Republican House member Mark Foley's molestation of underage children is still a serious affair that should lead to the resignation in disgrace of Republican House Leader Dennis Hastert, Republican House member Reynolds of New York, Republican House member Boehner, Republican House member Shimkus (along with other Republican House members and probably a few Republican Senators who will eventually be imprisoned as well), but it is really just yet another explosion of the truth in Republican sleaze land.

The Tom Kean led rewriting of history (yet another Republican pathological liar who would do anything to cover another Republican's ass, even if it means pulling the teens pants up and sending him on his way) is nothing more than a complete cover up of hundreds of lies that the Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rice gaggle of liars had told to the detriment of our men and women in uniform, the security of the US, and the financial health of this country. Disney actively and eagerly contributed to that.

115. You'll not see me
link to ABC.

I will boycott them indefinitely or until they correct the record.

Never did. I thought it was stupid.

Let's get real here. The movie has come and gone. Hardly anyone remembers it. And it got crappy ratings (a repeat of the far-better "9/11" beat it, for cryin' out loud!). Basically, ABC flushed $30M down the toilet.

If I were to boycott everything people on DU told me to boycott, I'd be sitting in a dark room with my thumb up my ass. I grew tired of that stuff.

It would take something really offensive to me to make me boycott.

127. A boycott over a move of the week and school materials

People who watch movies of the week don't vote and the vast majority of students are under the age to vote. Neither group matters, doesn't matter what information was presented to them.

131. I never was boycotting them.
My time spent on tv is so minimal that it would be meaningless. I can't remember the last time I actually watched ABC, NBC, CBS, or FOX. Or CNN, MSNBC, etc.

Life is short, and there are so many better ways to spend time.

Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 10:12 PM by bliss_eternal
That sucks. Boy, they aren't making any friends with their news programming are they? :eyes: I know that 20/20 got pretty bad, I didn't follow Nightline.

Thanks for responding, chimpsrsmarter--I appreciate your feedback! :)

137. I never watched it in the first place, however
I turned down a free ticket to Disney Land today....and I have a six-year-old. She will have to live without going there. At least while I have anything to do with it. It shouldn't be too hard because she's never been a huge fan of any of their characters. (Scooby Doo is God at our house. :))

Wait....please tell me Knottsberry Farm is not affiliated with Disney World, because we ARE going there soon.

140. Never have, because it's both stupid and futile...
not watching ABC television makes no difference to their ratings if you aren't one of the people whose viewing habits are monitored by the Nielsen group; boycotting ABC's advertisers would be kind of pointless, and probably impossible--they all advertise on EVERY OTHER network, and sooner or later you'd probably patroniser a business or purchase a product advertised on an ABC affiliate out of economic necessity and limitation of marketplace alternatives.

141. Scuze you, but stupid and futile?
Believing in truth and refusing to accept that without a
Nielsens' ratings box on your TV your voice or actions are meaningless is stupid and futile

Who said the only reason to boycott is to affect
advertisers' sales or the parent channel's ratings?

So, if you believe that the electronic voting machines at your precinct may
not properly, or may intentionally improperly count votes, there is no point in bothering to vote
because it will have no effect on an election? Since that is the case there is no point
trying to correct or change the voting system because it's just about your one
meaningless vote?

What do you do, just sulk in black and hope for massive media attention or just keep making as much money as you can because that's really all that matters in life anyway?
