Another cancellation, this one in a race that was hopeless and tightened to 14 points or even single digits before the Foley scandal erupted. Republican John Sweeney, in the top 20 most corrupt list of CREW, took $16,000 just a couple of weeks ago from Foley's PROM PAC. Sweeney refuses to demand Hastert's resignation--maybe because Hastert was scheduled to do a fundraiser for him.
Now Sweeney has cancelled the fundraiser and is lying about who cancelled who!
House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-IL, under increasingly hotter fire for his role in the Mark Foley scandal, will not be appearing at an Oct. 17 event hosted at the home of uber GOP donor/fundraiser Georgette Mosbacher with NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg to benefit U.S. Rep. John Sweeney, R-Clifton Park, the Chicago Sun-Times reported this morning.
There seems to be some disagreement between the Sweeney and Hastert camps as to who actually pulled the plug on the event. Sun-Times columnist Lynn Sweet wrote:
Sweeney’s chief of staff, Sean O’Neill, told me Friday that the speaker’s advance office called to cancel either late Thursday or Friday.
“It is our understanding he will not be coming to our event on the 17th,” O’Neill said. I asked if the Sweeney campaign asked Hastert to withdraw, and O’Neill said, “We did not.”
