South Korea nukes?

S.Korea calls North's test a "dangerous play"

SEOUL, Oct 9 (Reuters) - South Korea said that the North's announcement earlier on Monday that it had conducted a nuclear test was a dangerous tactic that could prompt other countries to develop nuclear weapons.

"In the long run, this was a dangerous play that could spark a nuclear arms buildup in other countries," President Roh Moo-hyun told reporters after talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Experts ponder Asian arms race

Oct. 9 SEOUL, South Korea — The specter of an Asian atomic arms race loomed over the region today after communist North Korea shocked its neighbors by announcing it conducted its first-ever nuclear test.

Raising the nuclear stakes from Pyongyang to Tokyo would put some of the world's biggest cities in the shadow of atomic weapons. It might also put nuclear arms in the hands of previously reluctant powers like South Korea or Taiwan.

2. Why?
South Korea and Taiwan are sitting safely under our nuclear umbrella. Why do they need their own?

6. India and Pakistan were very near war over Kashmir
when Pakistan tested their first nuke. Once that happened, and once the leaders of both countries realized what a nuclear war would cost them in terms of urban infrastructure and lives, they returned to diplomacy. The war threat level plummeted and they're still talking.

That's the best that can happen. It's like keeping that big, mean dog chained in your front yard. Thieves and thugs decide to pick on somebody else's house, and people who want something from you tend to speak nicely.

Evenutally, some country will use nukes in warfare. The hope of the world is that it will be a small, poor country with a very limited arsenal, and that the world will be so appalled at the cost that nuclear peace will be maintained for another 60-70 years.
